NEMA threatens to forcefully relocate residents of flood-prone areas

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says it will soon adopt stiff measures to force residents of flood-prone areas to relocate to safer abodes.

Malam Abdulsalam Mohammed, NEMA Zonal Coordinator (North-Central), told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Jos, that the Agency has no other alternative but to adopt that approach.

“We have tried enlightenment campaigns , and even begged people living in flood-prone areas to relocate, but while some have heeded, others are adamant and still there.

“NIMET has warned, and we have alerted everyone. We may have to go the extra mile and force out some of these people because danger appears imminent’’

Mohammed wondered why the residents were reluctant to relocate after several warnings and even after some of them suffered the consequences of such floods some years ago.

“Sometimes, they tell you that their ancestors lived on the buildings and insist that the ancestors were still there and will be angry if abandoned.

“Some people will also tell you that they purchased the lands and had no plans to leave their investments. Very funny excuses,” he said.

Mohammed advised Nigerians to listen to the voice of reason and be proactive so as to save themselves from looming disasters. (NAN)
