The Federal Ministry of Education said lack of accurate data may cause Nigeria to fail in its obligation of providing the international community information on its critical sectors.
The Permanent Secretary, Dr MacJohn Nwaobiala, made the observation on Monday in Abuja at a meeting with the National Technical Committee on the Implementation of Basic Registry and Information System in Nigeria (BRSIN).
According to him, lack of accurate data also means that Nigeria may not be able to provide data about education at relevant forums.
Nwaobiala commended the Federal Government for developing BRISIN for the purpose of providing basic infrastructure for data collection and storage in the nation.
He acknowledged that BRSIN would assist the ministry to successfully fight dearth of education data for the development of the sector.
“The ministry is conscious of the fact that key requirement for education sector is the existence of accurate data.
“The data that enable planners, policy makers and all those concerned with maintaining a dynamic education environment to have access to a robotic and accurate education data which promptly meet the needs of the sector and nation,’’ he said.
Nwaobiala pledged that his ministry would collaborate with the committee on the implementation of the project.
“The Director, Educational Planning Statistics whose purview is to develop data and information for the sector will work hand in hand with you,’’ he told the committee.
Earlier, Head of the BRISIN technical committee, Dr Anthony Uwa, had said that the meeting was to brief the ministry on the project, which would link all the local government areas in the country.
He said that BRISIN, facilitated by an Italian firm Dermo Impex, would deploy infrastructure for data collection from the 8,812 wards in the country and for their storage.
Uwa said that the data would help the Federal Government to keep records. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
