If I was not the Senate President, I wouldn't be going through the present trial - Saraki

SENATE President Bukola Saraki who appeared  before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT  following a 13-count charge against him by the Code of Conduct Bureau, over alleged falsification of assets he admitted, said yesterday that if he was not the Senate President, he would not be going through the present trial.

In a statement tilted,  "As I Appear Before The Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT)" he personally signed Tuesday night, Senate President Bukola Saraki who noted that his appearance before the CCT was a demonstration of his believe in rule of law and respect for the judiciary, said,  "Today, I appeared before the Code of Conduct Tribunal for the commencement of my trial in a case concerning the asset declaration form I filled in 2003 after I have explored the opportunity to defend my fundamental human rights in other courts.

"My appearance in court today once again demonstrates my belief in the rule of law and respect for the judiciary of our country.

"As I stated while taking the plea in the case, I reiterate my belief that the only reason while I am going through this trial is because I am Senate President. If I were to be just a Senator, I doubt if anybody will be interested in the asset declaration form I filled over twelve years ago.

"This belief stems from the fact that Section 3 (d) of the Code of Conduct  Bureau and Tribunal Act provides that If there is a breach or non-compliance with any section of the law, the person involved should be given the opportunity to either admit or deny and that in the case of a written admission, no reference to the Tribunal shall be necessary. So, If the CCB had followed the guidelines, procedure or the due process provided in its own law, we won't be having this trial
.
"It is my humble opinion that this case is a vivid example that there is still flagrant disregard for due process in our polity. This trial is not only being observed by Nigerians alone, the international community is watching because Nigeria is a key member of this community.

So, the executive, legislature and judiciary should  do the right thing that will truly demonstrate that we have imbibed the spirit of positive change.

"It is however necessary for me to thank my colleagues in the Senate for the solid support and solidarity they  demonstrated for me. I also thank my counsel for the brilliance they have shown in  presenting our case and the supporters who were present in the Tribunal in their hundreds. I want to assure you that I am innocent of all the charges and will clear my name in due course.
"May God continue to bless our country."

Grow up and see it for what it is, i expected you to say all corrupt people regardless of party should be tried and the poor Nigerians given back what was stolen from them.

    1. Truly mind-boggling the way some Nigerians reason - or don't reason. To think that the President's WAEC certificate is Nigeria's problem today shows crass dumbness. The PhD certificate of the previous president could not improve our electricity supply or wake up our refineries, over a full 6 years. Meanwhile, the "WAEC-less" President has, in less than 3 months significantly improved our power supply and brought back our refineries on stream. Anonymous@7:59am typifies the dumbness which dubious politicians exploit to the full.

  5. Frankly speaking, I cannot see if the whole is a legal, political or vindictive issue. No one is bigger than the law. Let Saraki face it today, tomorrow may be anyone's own turn. it may even one day revolve to the VP or even the President. We wait and see. If the fight against corruption will be fought to the last man, good and okay. Where has the tribunal been since 2003 when the ""offense" was committed? We hope and pray this not another waste of precious time, home video and abracadabra. is this not another way of fighting Saraki because he is the Senate President against their wish? What goes round comes round. This in-fighting may harm APC in the long run. Let APC tread softly, okay? JAY 2, ABUJA.

    1. All the anti-corruption organs were paralysed by GEJ's government. The same government made sure our refineries didn't work. If you got close to these bodies, you knew how frustrated they were professionally. Now we have a government that lets them all do their work, hence the action we are seeing. No witch-hunt, just professionals doing their work as they should have been doing!

  6. my problem is where hz this CCT or is it CCB been since 2003? why now. this CCB shld also be charged or probed for negligence of duty. I, as a Nigerian wants all the corrupt leaders to be jail for life regardless of who, even if the person is my relative. but the truth is dat politics is been played in every sector if not y didn't saraki be probed all this while, why wait till now dat he is a senate president. I don't understand. well since the so called CCB wz woken frm slumber, saraki shld face the charge and defend himself. but I hope all dis is nt political drama. but come to think of it, wz Amaechi also not charged with corruption? y hz EFCC not arrested him all dis while, or is it bc he is in alliance wit the 'man on top'? POLITICS! POLITICS!! POLITICS!!! God help Nigeria. (CHIOMA - ambassador for gud governance)

  7. my problem is where hz CCB been all this years. why now. I dnt understand all dis drama. infact CCB shld be charged for negligence of duty. I, as a Nigerian I desire dat all corrupt leaders be jailed for life. it doesn't matter who is involved even if it is my relative., as long as due process is followed. but d big question is why wait till wen saraki becomes senate president b4 charging him for false declaration of asset? dats d problem, everytin hz bn politicized. well since CCB hz woken frm slumber afta 13 yrs of sleeping n hz charged saraki for corruption he shld go and defend himself n if find guilty be punished accordingly. but wait a minute, wz amaechi nt charged for corruption too? y hz EFCC not arrested him, or is it bc he amaechi is in alliance wit d 'man on top'? 12. Karma is a natural law that must not be ignored. About this time in 2009, precisely in August, Bukola Saraki and his fellow conspirators influenced the then CBN Governor to take over some banks. The target then was Intercontinental Bank which Saraki owed heavily. They went to press with a list and value of assets of Erastus Akingbola and also Cecilia Ibru both real and imaginary to give the impression that they were corrupt. As expected, it generated and resulted in mass hatred for Akingbola and Ibru. All efforts to justify the legitimacy of such wealth and assets failed. Some of the assets were published at current value when they may have been acquired at far lower values. The press was manipulated and Saraki was the chief conspirator. Nigerians have a short memory and may have forgotten all that happened then.

A near similar fate is befalling Saraki. He will be struggling to justify this wealth and if this is followed to logical conclusion he may lose the assets and even go to jail. He may not have the benefit of even plea bargain.

Bukola Saraki is evil. He brings nothing to Nigerian political space but evil. The best place for him is the jail house. To save himself he brought down 5 banks with thousands out of jobs. There's no way he can get away with it. If the judgement of man spares him the judgment of God will not. It is just a question of time.
