Tinubu, not our godfather – CACOL

The Executive Director of Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, Mr. Debo Adeniran, said on Tuesday that contrary to some people's belief, the group was not doing the bidding of a former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu.

CACOL, which recently called on President Muhammadu Buhari not to give Tinubu's successor, Babatunde Fashola, any ministerial appointment, having spent N78.3m to upgrade his personal website while in office, said it was not being used by Tinubu against Fashola.

Adeniran, who addressed journalists in Lagos on Tuesday alongside leaders of other Civil Society Organisations, said CACOL had investigated Tinubu but could not pin any evidence of corruption on him.

He, however, said the group's battle with Fashola was yet a long-drawn one, saying that the battle had got to the point of no return.

He said, "Bola Ahmed Tinubu was arraigned at the level of the Code of Conduct Tribunal and a number of allegations have been leveled against him. We even helped to amplify some of these allegations.

"When Bola went to court and obtained an injunction, we said that was not satisfactory to us; we said that Bola should come to the open to defend the allegation that the PDP leveled against him.  We said that was the only way he could be seen not to be guilty as alleged, but nobody has been able to prove the allegations.

"We actually went out and tried to verify some of the companies that they said belonged to Bola, we couldn't find his name on the list of the directors of some of these companies. We didn't find his name at the Lands Registry; we didn't find his name at the Ministry of Housing and all that. A lot of people think that we have a godfather in him, it is not true. We looked at him eyeball to eyeball and said go and defend yourself."

Adeniran reiterated his call on Buhari not to give Fashola any appointment, saying CACOL had found from his antecedents that he was anti-people.

He said, "Basically they should know that if theirs is the power, theirs is the glory, it would not last forever. They have been covering up their deeds all the while, they have bought some section of the media, but they have gotten to a stage of no return and they could no longer silence the opposition again, at least they have seen the reality in the publication that came up on the website.

"So, basically, we have a long-drawn battle on our own hands. It is a battle that we cannot predict its end and we should be ready to sacrifice our all because if you are saying it doesn't affect you, it will affect somebody that is close to you.

"For corruption-compliant elements, they should find the closest exit and we should not allow any corrupt element to climb up the ladder, so that they would not foist themselves on us. If Fashola becomes anything in the federal cabinet, he is going to campaign against the Freedom of Information Act, he's going to campaign for the repealing of that Act because he doesn't like it from day one. He should not get there at all."

  1. Look at d way he's sounding, bush people. U could not pin any evidence of corruption on Tinubu, may be u should investigate your mother and u must find one. U confess u have covered Fashola for long that u have to open up now, so u even cover people's sin? Why then are opening up now if you are not being used against him? My friend go and sit down and eat d money they gave u well and stop making noise. Very soon u will also confess u have covered Tinubu so much that u have to open up.

  3. Fash all the way. No amount of false campaign against this outstanding performer will work. You said he mortgaged the Falomo shopping Plaza at 50m but willingly and conveniently omitted all the other details of the deal. May your work work against you if you don't come out with the truth.
