'NNPC GMD slot not enough for Igbo'

A former Governor of Anambra State in the defunct Third Republic, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s appointment of Dr. Ibe Kachikwu to head the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation was not enough to satisfy the South-East.

The President had on Tuesday relieved Dr. Joseph Dawha of his appointment as the Group Managing Director of the NNPC and appointed Kachikwu to replace him.

The new NNPC’s GMD is from the Igbo-speaking part of Delta State.

But in an interview with Punch Newspaper on Saturday, Ezeife insisted that the appointment did not undo the alleged lopsidedness of President Buhari’s appointments so far.

He said, “It is not atonement for the many neglects and insults that have happened with the National Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency and other agencies. How would a President appoint people into key positions in Nigeria, yet none of them is Igbo? What kind of thing is that?

“On merit, we have the best people in Nigeria and that is not boasting. On motivation, it is the same thing. If Buhari wants to ignore federal character, we are not begging him for any appointment.

“And it is good for us to know where we belong and make appropriate adjustments. It is not a matter of whether Nigeria appreciates us or not. If they think we have done enough and we should go, there is more where what we brought to Nigeria came from. It came from God and we are not going to throw it away. If we go away, we leave with it. We like Nigeria, but one cannot insult and treat a group as if they don’t exist.”

The Igbo leader also described as unfortunate the ethnic segregation in the country. According to him, if a person from one region disagrees with another, there should be a less vindictive way of expressing it.

The elder statesman further decried the development in the House of Representatives, where every region except the South-East got a principal position.

“I have found that only a very insignificant minority of the Igbo people are saying that they have packed all their eggs in one basket; voting or no voting for any person has not been of consequence to our people. They went for elections and voted as they should and they are proud of it; they can repeat same tomorrow,” he added.

  1. Kudos Ezeife! You've spoken like a son of the son! Diametrically different like the ilks of Rochas Okoroji and former Anambra state governor! Every individual has got the right and freedom to vote whoever he/she deems right and shouldn't for any reason be victimised cos of it! We have a sorry of a president who went internationally to acknowledge that he's ready to victimise the South East and South South for not voting for him! He's obviously fit to lead cows only! That of course is his natural calling!

  5. What l want is competent people and it does not matter where they come from.
What is the essence of appointing people from geographical zones and did nothing. Rather increase the poverty level of Nigeria
What we need is good government that will provide good life.
Who does it does not matter.

  7. Yes Dr. Ezeife; Igbos are the best in Nigeria in all aspects of corruption in the land and abroad from 419, stealing, kidnapping, drug trafficking, armed robbery, ritual killings, money ritual etc. Always giving Nigeria that bad international image. Nobody dispute this.

  8. This Elder is a disappointment, he is only trying to brew trouble... it's the like of you that is responsible for the indiscriminate killing of Igbo boys in overseas because they have not been taught the virtues of patience and honesty. I gave said it that an Igbo man cannot rule Nigeria because they are not united or have one voice. Eziefe has clearly state that delta Igbo are not igbos.. Elderstateman indeed..hmmmmn

    1. Thats what i keep trying to explain to my brothers. The anambra man feels superior to the ebonyi man and the abia man to the imo man etc so if you form your own country where wud the capital be located and who will the leaders be??? This anambra former governor will obviously state that his people are the God ordained leaders of the igbo nation then they will kill each other until the weakest members beg to rejoin Nigeria. The silliest part of this secession is that even though the igbos dont regard the oil producing states, including the igbo speaking parts, as igbo; they somehow believe that these states share in their struggle. If the igbos want to be land locked and faced with self inflicted and performed genocide, i suggest they figure out how to assist in making Nigeria great again rather than being an opposition.

    2. Turaki read the former governors statement well. He was not excluding the igbo Deltas or Anambra Igbos etc, but saying the post of GMD NNPC is not enough. He is asking for some more snd accordingly. Read well b4 you comment.

    3. That is a weak argument of a coward. Good leadership fix such challenges. What matters is that the underlying sense of nationhood is there to be strengthened. Leave that problem to the adults ok?

They sell their future for little money and now that the jig is up, they still want to open their mouth despite majority of them voting for that traitor Jonathan. All of una wey u want buhari to die, may your dreams, blessing die with you.. He is here to fix what you greedy lot have destroyed over the years. And to the minority of the igbos and sensible ones in that tribe, thank you for not selling your future away and may your blessings be bountiful like the streams of water... LONG LIFE PA BUHARI!!!

  16. When the Igbos wanted to go the Igbo hater and tribalistic Awolowo was the architect behind the Igbos not allowed to go. So, hating the Igbos by Yorubas did not start today. It is hypocrisy to say that that Igbos are very corrupt in Nigeria when I read everyday the atrocities being committed everyday by the Yorubas ranging from ritual killings to prostitution in the high places. Yet they have the effrontery to castigate Igbos. Somebody is asking if Delta State is not Igbo and I want to ask you, is the Delta State South East? Why leave a whole 5 Eastern states for Delta State? Well,I want to tell the Yorubas that they have not yet arrived. Let them not think that they have arrived. God has a way of punishing haters as hating is murder according to the Bible.

    1. What has prostitution and ritual killings in the yoruba land got to do with the political appointment of a Delta man by an Hausa man? Your level of reasoning is far below average. All what you said is like dirty water by the roadside.

  17. This issue about appointments by the President should not be taken as an abuse of authority but what is noble and laudable. Nigeria wants a CHANGE and it has got the change through the election of PMB. The important thing to consider is making the change the way it should work naturally. I can assure you that the President is not alone in making appointments. He is not a dictator. He is quite insensitive to appointing capable, honest and qualified hands to work with him. Let us shelve undue propaganda, tribalism, nepotism and move the country forward. I am convinced, PMB would do the right thing for the country. It is to early to blame him for doing the right thing. Why not wait for the appointment of Ministers and see to what extent it has affected each ethnic groups. The Igbos must always keep in mind that there are other viable dedicated tribes in Nigeria. The change has come and let all of us sincerely appreciate it.

  18. The average igbo man is a complete embarrassment. You could not vote for Buhari, you want Biafra, and at the same time you talk of political appointments. How about waiting till the next elections to express why you should get any. Generality of the Igbo race always believe they are better than everyone. Here is news for you, you are not even better than yourselves.

  20. This issue and topic will continue till kingdom come because we have refused to learn. Ibo, Yoruba, Hausa and all the other minor tribes this great country binds together can only survive on the platform of true democracy. A true democracy believes that we are one and if a job needs to be done, I rather give it to the person that have the capacity and capability to do the job well and not a fool because its ethnic group calls for the job. That is what has brought this great country to its knee today. We are too ethnic and religion oriented. Do you see even Americans are voting our brothers in their country because of their knowledge and skills. Please I am proudly Nigeria from Edo (Ishan Language) and I support PMB choice of appointments. The NNPC GMD has the skills and knowledge to the job better any fool.
