Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Ghali Na’abba, says many Nigerian politicians are “highly irresponsible’’.
Na’Abba said this at the National Security Conference on Community Partnership Approach to Internal Security and Crime Management, organised by the Police and the Sun Newspapers in Abuja.
He attributed the lingering security challenges in the country to successive irresponsible leadership.
The former speaker said that the appointment and election of the leadership in the country had been hijacked by a few people.
He said that irresponsible people should not be given leadership positions either by appointment or election.
“No politician should promote persons of questionable character, sycophants for leadership positions,“ he said.
He said that as long as responsible people stayed away from politics, quality leadership would continue to be an illusion in the country.
Na’Abba said that political parties must adopt internal democracy in choosing quality leaders in order to have quality leadership.
In a remark, former governor of Abia, Mr Orji Kalu, Publisher of Sun Newspapers, said that management of insecurity and crime required concerted efforts by all stakeholders.
He said that efforts by the police to provide security had been hampered by insufficient fund and manpower.
Kalu said that insecurity and crime related challenges had impacted adversely on the social and economic wellbeing of Nigerians.
He urged President Muhammdu Buhari not to spare anyone found wanting in the area of corruption.
