Nigeria is not a rich country - Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the widely held belief that Nigeria is a rich country by people across the world is erroneous.

Nigeria, he said on Monday, “is not a rich country.”

He said the reality was that that impression was wrong.

A statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, quoted the President as speaking while granting an audience to the outgoing President of the African Development Bank, Dr. Donald Kaberuka, inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The President said information at his disposal showed that the country’s social services had to be seriously rehabilitated.

He said his administration would fall back on institutions like the AfDB for support in generating employment, especially using the agricultural sector.

Buhari said, “An impression has been erroneously created that we are a rich country, but looking at the economic profile of the country today, you will see that that is not necessarily the case.

“Our social services have to be seriously rehabilitated. We need urgent attention in areas like education and health services, not only in the north-eastern part of the country, but all round the country.”

  1. It's is dishonorable for APC to claim achievement in those areas mentioned by PDP or say PDP didn't achieve anything. Does it take 3 months to do TAN on our refineries or wipe polio. It takes more than 2yrs to declare an area polio free. Nigerian politicians are special breed of liars. APC shouldn't have replied in other not to bring out PDP's achievements instead of Lia Muhammad to confirm he's really a liar. Let's give honour to whom it's due. In USA politics is different yet our president would go there to paint his own country with tar. He should understand that he's diminishing himself too.

  2. I can smell a rat here. Bihari shouldn't use this as excuse for not performing. Nigeria is a reach country, no doubt about that.

  3. I quite concur with the PMB on this; the wealth of a Nation is not measured by available resources but rather the economic indicators like employment ratio,GDP and earning capacity of its citizens. Can we describe Nigeria as being rich when most citizens are feeding daily on less than a dollar ?

  4. From what was happening in the country before, one can look at our great country as a poor country. But the reality is the mismanagement of our God given resources that is responsible for our predicament.
Comparing Nigeria with other countries that manage their resources wisely, I will disagree that this country is poor.

Applying capital punishment to flush away looters and corruption is what we need. Foreigners floor in to make money while some of us running out looking for work. Let us put our house in order we will see how great is this country.
