Kano sacks 2,620 street sweepers

The Kano State Government on Friday sacked no fewer than 2,620 street sweepers.

The street sweepers were employed by the state’s Refuse Management and Sanitation Board.

Addressing journalists after the weekly state executive council meeting in Kano, the Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Muhammad Garba, said the disengagement of the sweepers followed the government’s determination to curb unnecessary expenditure.

Garba said state government was spending not less than N26.2m every month to pay the 2,620 sweepers as each worker collects a monthly allowance of N10, 000, just as most of them did not report for work.

The commissioner explained that the termination of their appointments would pave way for probity and accountability in the board.

He added that the state government revoked all the shops allocated to individuals within the vicinity of the Sani Abacha Stadium by the administration of former Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso.

“The state government noted with dismay that those corner shops within the Sani Abacha Stadium were not in line with public interest and henceforth revoked it,” Garba said.

  1. Why is this stadium still named after an individual who stole hundred of billions of Naira from the country? Does the country celebrate criminal leaders?
