EFCC must probe Amaechi - PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State on Tuesday insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari must investigate the immediate past governor of the state, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, over allegations of corruption.

This is just as the party petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, detailing alleged corrupt practices that took place under Amaechi

The PDP Deputy Publicity Secretary in Rivers, Mr. Samuel Nwanosike, said since President Buhari had promised to maintain a zero tolerance for corruption, he should not be silent on how the past administration in Rivers managed the affairs of the state.

Nwanosike, who spoke with journalists in Port Harcourt, urged the President not to spare anyone found culpable, adding that proceeds from some of the past transactions in the state could not be traced.

Reacting to statements credited to some members of the All Progressives Congress on the state of Rivers economy, Nwanosike lamented that the current administration in the state had to borrow to pay salary arrears, which the Amaechi administration failed to pay.

He dismissed the claims that some PDP members in the state were planning to defect to the APC, describing it as laughable.

According to Nwanosike, “Since the President of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, has told the world that he is a man with zero tolerance for corruption, we, the people of Rivers, are asking that there should be no sacred cow. We are saying that corruption in Rivers State should be investigated and justice should be done.

“As we speak to you, we cannot trace the proceeds that emanated from all the government’s transactions that that took place in Rivers State.”

The PDP chieftain explained that a petition had been sent to the EFCC over the alleged fraudulent transactions involving the immediate past administration in the state between December 1 and 8, 2014.

He said, “Can you imagine that between December 1 and 8, 2014, with one address – 25 Trans-Amadi Road, Port Harcourt, over N21bn of Rivers funds were transferred? We are asking, where did these funds go?”

On the claim by the APC governorship candidate, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, that some PDP members in the state were planning to defect to the APC, Nwanosike challenged him (Peterside) to mention the names of such PDP members.

In his reaction, however, a former aide to Amaechi, Chief Tony Okocha, said Amaechi had never been afraid of probe, adding that the ex-governor was transparent in all he did for the people of the state.

Okocha explained that the PDP in the state was only interested in soiling the good name of the former governor and maintained that the party would not achieve such an aim.

  2. Probes are not initiated by making noise in the media. Anyone who believes an individual should be probed has to prepare the allegations and submit to the EFCC for action. And by the way, it is NOT the President that probes - it is the EFCC. I deem ignorant and irrational people who say "Buhari must probe so-and-so...". Sad how educated people can make so much uneducated noise.

    1. You are the main person making uneducated noise. Why will EFCC be selective in their crusade? Are they not under Buhar who promised zero tolerance? Useless man.

    3. Where did you read that EFCC has been petitioned and what were the substances of the petitions? Many so-called petitions are actually beer-parlor gossips like "Probe OBJ for Halliburton" and things like that. A petition would state exactly what the accused supposedly did. If EFCC takes unsubstantiated accusations to the court, they would fail flat because judges do not deal in unsubstantiated accusations. Nigerians are still too emotional when calling for a probe. Instead of stating the substance, they just make noise and accuse people without solid evidences.

  3. Reply to the first post: I don't think that you read the news thoroughly well. If you did read it at all, then you are a careless reader. It was mentioned there that EFCC has been petitioned to probe the past administration in the state but they have not done anything.

  4. Don't mind EFCC and their selective probing. if it's to arrest the electoral officer on Amaechi's order, they will jump to the call.

  5. Amaechi may have invested heavily in Buhari campaign and election but unless Buhari probes Amaechi, No one will take Buhari's anti corruption drive seriously.

  6. I wonder if PDP members has totally recovered from the shock of the last general election's defeat, hence there shouldn't be hues and cries everyday. If the party that governed Nigeria for 16 years failed to understand the mode of EFCC's work, then, its bad. For the sake of my readers, EFCC major procedures are in two verifiable parts. The probe aspect consist of proper investigation and gathering of facts and figures to back up their case. More often than not, this would not be publicized for security reason. The second part is the arrangement in court of competent jurisdiction, of the accused individual for trial. This is the part and the trial processes that are always celebrated and come to the knowledge of the public. I am sure the present EFCC would not want to compromise, I bet you. If Hon. Rotimi Amaechi is found wanting, he will face the trial.

    1. Thanks Bashir for this education. We have far too much online empty allegations and calls for probes of individuals as if PMB has to go rounding people up to haul them into prison on the basis of uninvestigated and unsubstantiated accusations. Too much emotion.
