In his bid to cut cost of governments, President Mohammadu Buhari has announced that there would be no federal government delegation for this year’s hajj in Saudi Arabia.
He however stated that the government shall play its traditional roles of providing consular, medical and security services to Nigerian pilgrims.
With the decision, the government is expected to save about $1 million and N30m in local expenses.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu who stated this on Monday quoted the president as saying that the decision was not targeted at any individual or group.
He also stated that States were at liberty to sponsor their pilgrims, if they so desired.
“The states can deal with that (meaning appointment of own delegations) but this year at the Center, we will not be involved” Shehu said. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

States should not designate anybody to Saudi Arabia or Jerusalem in the name of hajj or whatever religious purpose. People should foot their bill or stay at home and pray like the rest of us. Let's stop wasting public funds when people are dying of hunger, lack of education, disease, etc..
ReplyDeleteWe must stop this nonsense. They waste public funds on their families and cronies. The hajj and Jerusalem freebies must stop.
DeleteWhat are they always running to go and pray for. Has it reduced corruption or stopped their immoralities. I must agree with PMB on this.
ReplyDeleteI fully support stopping all government funding of pilgrimages, but this is not because it has not reduced corruption or stopped immoralities. In a population of 170million, you will ALWAYS find the good, the bad and the ugly. I don't even believe that government support of pilgrimages is with an intent to reducing the ills in our society - pilgrimages do not reduce anything nor do they make you a better person. They are pure "religious tourism" which has no lasting value.
