PDP chieftain challenges Buhari - 'Don't probe Jonathan alone, extend your probe to 1999'

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and an aspirant in the 2016 governorship election in Edo State, Mr. Matthew Iduoiriyekemwen has insisted that if President Muhammadu Buhari must embark on probing the activities of past regimes in the country, he must not probe former President Goodluck Jonathan alone but extend it to 1999.

Iduoiriyekemwen, who spoke to newsmen on Tuesday  said that while he welcomed the decision of the Buhari administration to probe Jonathan, it should not be a way to discredit the former President’s government.

“There is nothing wrong in probing. What is wrong in probe is when it becomes witch-hunt. Yes, we are in a democratic regime, if President Muhammadu Buhari wants to probe the activities of past regimes, he should look at what has been happening in this country from 1999.

“There has been a lot of maladministration and corruption, there has been a lot of stealing and wasting of government resources and if he wants to probe, he must extend it to 1999 till date,” he said.

  1. I disagree with Matthew. The burden to probe Obasanjo lay on Jonathan, but he chose not to do it. That's his prerogative. If Buhari chooses to probe only Jonathan, his predecessor, that's perfectly correct. That's who handed over to him; that's whose books he can look at. That is no witch-hunt. If someone is guilty, and you find them guilty, that is no witch-hunt, as is being insinuated by Jonathan's camp. It is witch-hunt when you did not do anything, and someone is coming after you for thhe wrong reason, that is witch-hunt. To ask Buhari to probe Nigerian leaders from 1999 is nonsense. If some of the names from 1999 show up during a Jonathan probe, then that would be grounds to extend the probe to them. Lots of Nigerian leaders belong in prison, and nowhere else.

    1. You are spot-on. Buhari can only look into how his immediate predecessor managed the affairs of the country. It is not his business to look at how Shagari managed it in 1979 or Obasanjo in 1999. It is the thieves that are trying to divert attention from themselves by asking Buhari to probe all past governments. Jonathan could have probed Obasanjo if he wanted to. The fact that he did not probe Obasanjo meant that he (Jonathan) was satisfied with how OBJ managed the affairs. (And why not? OBJ left US$61 billion in foreign reserves for him!) But Buhari has every reason to probe how the US$61 bn Jonathan inherited was depleted to US$29bn at hand-over.

  2. Please it's not everybody that speak vanguard will be publishing here. First of all what stop GEJ from probing the administration before him? Secondly Matthew Iduoiriyekemwen was a commissioner to NDDC in Edo state during the same period 1999-2007 so if PMB is probing that period, he can't escape the from being indicted. Matthew that use NDDC money to empower the youth to be causing harm in a village called Amagba near Benin. Now those youth has become wild that they are uncontrollable now. Please Matthew should name some of the project that he completed during his time as NDDC commissioner or he should account for the funds that was allocated to Edo state from NDDC!

  7. Your arguments will only give incumbent leaders the resolve NEVER again to hand over to opposition parties, but to cronies who would cover their tracks. Probe should be retroactive so we can start anew. We need a clean slate -- even if it is to confiscate the loot of posterior looters. Let us start to see corruption against humanity in Nigeria, because that is exactly what it is. A national reorientation is needed, starting from including anti-corruption subjects and courses in our school curriculum!

  8. It's imperative that Obasanjo's administration is probed as well cos it's the worse and most greedy of all the administrations! Leaving it out and tackling only GEJ will be seen naturally as a witch-hunt. For fairness, Obj the grand thief should be included.

  10. Buhari cannot probe only Jonathan's administration in the name of fighting corruption when he was put in government with a stolen money. He should start probing from the inception of democracy. He is welcome to probe Jonathan as long as he will also probe Obasanjo, Atiku, Tinibu, Amechi and the rest.

  11. Most if you here are saying absolute nonsense. Buhari will probe only the most currupt which is GEJ. If you are not okay with that go and jump into the lagoon, period.
