Barack Obama, the US president, has landed in Ethiopia, beginning a two-day stay and becoming the first American leader to visit Africa’s second most populous nation.
The president’s jet touched down at Addis Ababa’s international airport on Sunday after a short flight north from the Kenyan capital Nairobi, and he was greeted on the tarmac by Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn.
The visit will include talks with the Ethiopian government, a key strategic ally but criticised for its record on democracy and human rights.
Obama will also become the first US president to address the African Union, the 54-member continental bloc, at its Chinese-built headquarters.
He will also hold talks with regional leaders on the civil war in South Sudan.
AU Commission chief Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma hailed what she said will be an “historic visit” and a “concrete step to broaden and deepen the relationship between the AU and the US.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

Obama! Na wa o! You said "Come here boy" to our own Buhari and went to say "Eku ile sir" (here i come sir) to ordinary prime minister in Ethiopia
ReplyDeleteNigerian political leaders, see what "Egunje" corruption has reduced you to despite all the billions of naira and $ you have stolen. It's not in all cases that wealth commands respect o. High time you woke up from your slumber. .
Obama u know that u are coming to Africa few days after u have allowed Buhari to fly all the way from naija to America just to come see u for nothing, did u consider how money, time and energy wasted for the journey, only to come and have dinner with u. What stops u to pass by our country even if for few hours and save us this unnecessary expenses, with all the entourage still nothing comes out of it.what a great let down on naija, once known by the Americans as GIANT of Africa. It is time for us to sit down and ask ourselves questions, where are we heading to?
