New Chief of Army Staff, Maj.-Gen. Tukur Buratai to celebrate Sallah with Nigerian troops

The acting Chief of Army Staff, Maj.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, on Thursday met behind closed-doors with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Buratai who was, until his new appointment, the Commander of the Multinational Joint Task Force which has its headquarters in Ndjamena, was not with the new service chiefs when they met with Buhari shortly after the announcement of their appointments on Monday.

The Thursday meeting therefore afforded the new Army chief an opportunity to hear from the President what he expects from him.

He later told State House correspondents that he would be traveling to Damaturu, Yobe State, to celebrate Sallah with troops fighting the Boko Haram sect.

“I am just a few hours on the seat. We will be talking later. But I will be going to Damaturu tomorrow to visit the troops. I want to go and celebrate Sallah with them,” the Army chief said as he made his way to his waiting car.

Buhari had on Monday approved the appointments of new service chiefs and National Security Adviser for the country.

Their appointments, which was contained in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, followed Buhari’s sacking of the former occupants of the offices earlier in the day.

Apart from Buratai, other service chiefs appointed by the President In acting capacity were Maj.-Gen. Abayomi Gabriel Olonishakin – Chief of Defence Staff; Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas – Chief of Naval Staff; Air Vice Marshal Sadique Abubakar – Chief of Air Staff; and Air Vice Marshal Monday Riku Morgan – Chief of Defence Intelligence.

Buhari also appointed Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno (rtd.) as the National Security Adviser.
