I have no regrets establishing complaints commission - Obasanjo

A former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has said he has no regrets establishing the Federal Public Complaints Commission when he was the military Head of State.

He said this on Tuesday when the new Ogun State Commissioner in the commission, Mrs Oluyemisi Somorin-Dawodu, paid him a courtesy visit at his Hilltop residence in Abeokuta.

The FPCC, which has since metamorphosed into the Public Complaints Commission, was established by Decree 31 of 1975 of the Supreme Military Council when Obasanjo was the Head of State.

Obasanjo noted that the commission was established to create a platform through which ordinary Nigerians could be defended and secure justice.

The former president said he was happy that the commission had maintained its relevance as the hope of the common man, but stressed that the body could do better.

He said, “As I listen to the Radio and hear the less-privileged talk about the relief and justice they got through the assistance of the commission, then I have no regrets ever establishing the body.

“Although I cannot say that the need we saw then has completely disappeared, there have been testimonies of cases where the commission has come to the rescue of the helpless.”

Obasanjo said he would continue to provide necessary support to compliment government’s efforts in enhancing the operations of the commission.

Somorin-Dawodu solicited Obasanjo’s assistance in the renovation of roofless office of the commission at Ota in the Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area of the state.
