The Diocesan Bishop of Osun North East Diocese, Church of Nigeria, Otan Ayegbaju, Rev. Bamisebi Olumakaiye, has advised Governor Rauf Aregbesola, to stop sponsoring of Christians and Muslims on pilgrimages to Jerusalem and Mecca as one of the measures to plug loopholes through which state’s resources are lost.
The cleric gave this advice in Otan Ayegbaju on Monday at the Pre synod press conference organised by the church.
The bishop urged the governor to prioritise payment of workers’ salaries and pensions, saying the economy of the state depended on these payments.
According to him, the nonpayment of salaries and pensions is having negative effects on everybody in the state including artisans and market women.
Olumakaiye said, “I must commend the governor in the area of infrastructural development, the network of roads, the schools and other projects, there is no way you can take that away from him but at the same time we have to tell him that workers’ salaries must be given priority.
“I must even say that sponsoring of pilgrimages to Jerusalem or Mecca should be stopped until the salaries are paid and the situation improves.”
The bishop also advised the governor and his colleagues who were finding it difficult to pay workers in their states to cut down on some expenses in order to save money to pay workers.
He stated that there were some things which state governors spend money on which should be stopped. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

I find it difficult to understand why the Federal, State or Local Governments are sponsoring people to either Jerusalem or Mecca to perform their individual pilgrimage. State resources are use for work for the masses. Those who want to perform any pilgrimage should do that with their personal money. The most surprising thing is that, it is only the rich that are been sponsor, and that is bad.
