Bayelsa governor blasts PDP defectors for dumping Jonathan

The Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has decried the defection of some members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, to the All Progressives Congress.

Mr. Dickson said most of the defectors were beneficiaries of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s magnanimity over the years.

In a statement on Tuesday by his media aide, Daniel Iworiso-Daniel, the governor lamented that the defectors abandoned the former president as soon as he lost the last presidential election.
He also described them as enemies of the Ijaw nation.

The statement was issued after a meeting between the governor and some senior members of the PDP in the state under the aegis of Bayelsa Elders’ Consultative Council in Yenagoa, the state capital.
The PDP in Bayelsa was hit by mass defection soon after Mr. Jonathan, an indigene of the state, lost the presidential election to his APC challenger, Muhammadu Buhari.

Describing the defectors as ingrates, Mr. Dickson said they do not mean well for the state.
He said they should have reciprocated the former president’s goodwill by staying back in the PDP.
“These persons are clearly not for us, they are enemies of the Ijaw nation and it is sad that people who have benefited immensely from the PDP and Dr. Jonathan could within so short a time jump ship,” he said.

“And yet they come and deceive us that they love us. These are not persons to be taken serious and we must not fall prey to their antics.”

The statement quoted the PDP elders as saying those who left the party were “fair-weather politicians with savage mentality.”

It also said the elders unanimously passed a vote of confidence in Mr. Dickson and urged him to contest the December 5 governorship election in the state on the platform of the party.
