Abia council boss slashes own salary by 50%

The Transition Committee Chairman of Aba South Local Government Area of Abia State, Okezie Erondu, has announced the slashing of his salary by 50 percent.

Erondu, who disclosed this in an interview with journalists in Umuahia, shortly after presenting the letter conveying his decision to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, said the decision was in sympathy with workers who were yet to be paid because of the dwindling revenue.

He said he only took a cue from Ikpeazu who, penultimate week, took a similar decision until the backlog of workers’ salary arrears are cleared.

Erondu, who expressed concern over the plight of workers, promised to protect the interest of workers in the council.

He said a lot of sacrifices would have to be made by all and sundry as a way out of the current problem.

“Governor Okezie Ikpeazu set the ball rolling by sacrificing 50 percent of his salary. This is to show the people of the state that he was here to work and that he was not going to play with the development of the state.”

“It is now the responsibility of those who truly claim to love the state and interested in the welfare of the workers to also make some sacrifices no matter how minimal. There is no sacrifice that is too small to bring about a turn around.

“The sacrifices Ikpeazu has already made in Aba already has endeared him to the hearts of the people in the area. These are things that I saw and decided to make my own little sacrifice in solidarity with him.”

The council boss, who vowed to end ghost workers syndrome, solicited the workers’ support for Ikpeazu.
