An Enugu Federal High Court has sentenced two drug traffickers, Okafor Chidinma and Iheme Onyemauchechukwu, to forty and fifteen years in prison respectively. The court was presided by Justice D.V. Agishi, according to a statement by the drug agency, NDLEA.
The duo were arrested at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu.
The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, said Ms. Chidinma, a professional dancer, was charged for conspiracy, trafficking and unlawful possession of 3.450kg of amphetamine while Mr. Onyemauchechukwu was charged with trafficking and unlawful importation of 9.975kg of heroin.
Ms. Chidinma was convicted as charged and sentenced to 10 years each in count one and count two and 20 years in count three, making it a total of 40 years. Mr. Onyemauchechukwu was charged with trafficking and unlawful importation of 9.975kg of heroin. He was convicted as charged and sentenced to ten years in count one and a fine of N1million naira and five years in count two with a fine of N500,000.
Mr. Giade, in a statement signed by the agency’s spokesperson, Ofoyeju Mitchell, expressed satisfaction with the judgment.
“While this punishment is expected to correct the convicts, it will equally help to deter others from getting involved in drug trafficking. The Agency commits huge resources in drug investigation, arrests and prosecution. Judgment like this will further lend credence to the nation’s anti-drug campaign,” Mr. Giade said in the statement.
