Rivers people are with me – Wike

Rivers State governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, said on Wednesday that the people of the state were still with him despite the boast by the All Progressives Congress that it would win at the election petitions tribunal.

Wike, who spoke when some members of the Delta State House of Assembly paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House in Port Harcourt, said the state would continue to belong to the Peoples Democratic Party.

The governor explained that no amount of intimidation would change the mandate the people of the state gave to him on April 11, 2015.

He said, “We are not worried by their (APC) claim that they have the tribunal. All we know is that Rivers State will always remain a PDP state. The people are with us.

“While the APC were busy embarking on negative propaganda because they had excess money, we were with the people at the grassroots selling our programmes to them. That was why they voted for us massively.”

Wike said that his administration would always maintain separation of power between the arms of government and promised that never again would the Rivers State House of Assembly sit in the Government House.

The governor assured that he would promote the independence of the legislature by ensuring that the funds of the state Assembly would come as part of first line charge.

“You don’t need to pocket the legislature before you think you are safe in government. What is needed is cooperation with the state Assembly in the interest of good governance,” he said.

Wike said his administration would continue to further regional cooperation in the South-South region for sustainable development.

Earlier, the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Mr. Monday Okemeni, had commended Wike for returning Rivers State to the PDP, saying that the governor had proved the APC wrong with his political clout.

Okemeni described Wike as a leading light in the political engineering of the country, adding that the governor would play a key role in the promotion of development of the South-South.

Also, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr. Ikuinyi Ibani, said that interface between the two state assemblies was necessary for proper regional integration.
