President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday ordered the removal of all military checkpoints set up in the wake of Boko Haram activities across the country.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Aliyu Ismaila, disclosed this to State House correspondents after a meeting Buhari had with service chiefs at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
“The President had instructed the Chief of Defence Staff to get the Chief of Army Staff and Inspector-General of Police to remove all the military men along the roads across the country,” he said.
Ismaila said the meeting had further encouraged the security chiefs to do more in the war against insurgency because of the leadership being provided by the President who is a retired military officer.
He said the service chiefs left the meeting happier because the President updated and enriched their strategic plans.
He added that the meeting also discussed the movement of the command centre to the North-East.
He said they briefed the President on how far they had gone and they were given some additional assignments.
He however assured Nigerians that the centre would soon take off.
“I also want to assure Nigerians that with what we have come out with from this meeting, we are very enthusiastic that the issue of Boko Haram will soon be over.
” He has given us hope that we will see peace and security in the very near future,” he added.
Ismaila said he was sure there would be a difference in the insurgency war with the common front that has been formed by Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, Benin and Niger.
“We have all strategised and we are coming out with one type of strategy that we are going to address the Boko Haram with, unlike before,” he added.
He said the issue of sacking of service chiefs did not come up during the meeting.
On the absence of heads of some security agencies at the meeting, Ismaila said, “This is not a national security meeting, this is a briefing by the Ministry of Defence on the operationalisation of the Multi-National Joint Task Force and the relocation of the command control centre to the North-East, so it is something restricted to the ministry of Defence.”
Motorists had been facing harrowing experience on the Abuja-Keffi Road and some other roads following the military checkpoints mounted at strategic spots. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

It wouldn't do us well to remove military checkpoints across the nation. Please think twice.
ReplyDeleteI hope the gravity of this action is well understood by the President and his service chiefs. Removal of military checkpoints in the north east is a dangerous move for those of us that use the Maiduguri-Damaturu high way. These insurgents crop up on unsuspecting travellers along that road and kill, with the military check points in short distance the insurgents rarely have the time to cause much havoc even if they attack because of the rapid response from some of these military men positioned few kilometres apart. Imagine what then happens if this military men are removed from the high way. The insurgents can kill as much as 100 people before response from a military base in the towns or cities. I hope they have a better alternative, lack of which is leaving travellers to the terrorist who will take advantage of this presidential order to cause as much damage as they can. GOD bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteB4 removing them alternative measure shld ve been taken. Who is advising you Mr President? Hmmmmmm
ReplyDeleteThe check posts be handed over to "MOPOL squads and Police " to continue public Safety & Security. Yes, it causes little delay for commuters but Public Security is Utmost.
ReplyDeleteMr Anonymous I have study your commentary in different for a, I came to conclusion that you think with your nose and make judgment with your anus.
ReplyDeleteYou just open your mouth wide and talk, any way to talk is so cheap this days.
Only God knows how and what you think PMB is.
PMB is a train leader. He did not just come out from Pluto or Jupiter.
Please, when you read message from my president, kindly give it a deep thought with reflection. He is not a novice like the other that was not prepared to be a leader. Remember Gej came as president with a lot of sentiment arranged and executed by OBJ, which he OBJ later regretted. I am still demanding as an individual for an apology from OBJ in the near future.
so please watch and see how PMB is going to give qualitative leadership.
If unfortunately you can't have enough patient, you can just go to the neighboring country and watch things is it unfold itself.
Thanking you for your understanding
I don't think this response solves anything. It is not enough to merely support a leader because he is your hero and fail to constructively analyze his decisions. Moreover, resorting to insults betrays your meanness. It is a cause of concern to any well meaning Nigerian that removing the military from checkpoints exposes defenceless citizens to activities of the violent. Instead of swallowing all Buhari's decisions hook, line and sinker, use good judgment and contribute meaningfully.
DeleteYou are a fool at fourty and you will always remain a fool forever...
DeleteIt is ridiculous to keep the military in check points, when it happens it means the country in question is under serious security breach. This situation hampers foreign Direct investment. Therefore, the work of internal security at this point outside North East should be handled by the police without unnecessary check points. PMB did well...
ReplyDeletethose who are in opposition are correct because they or their love once have had experience, so we pray that those who support should think fast and recommend another means first if not we love some of their love one s to have the same fate as other victims of BH and arm robbers attack , then they will learn, a military man retired or active in politics is a politician, when failure comes blame goes the other way
