OSUN: Teachers doubt Aregbesola’s promise to pay June 30

The Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers in Osun State, Mr. Wakeel Amuda, has said Governor Rauf Aregbesola has not officially informed labour unions that he will pay workers’ salaries by the end of June.

Amuda disclosed this in a telephone interview with our correspondent in Osogbo on Friday. The NUT boss said he and other labour union leaders read the news on the pages of newspapers like other people and that the governor had not formally informed them of his readiness to pay the outstanding salaries.

He said, “The governor has never called a meeting to inform us that he would pay us on or before June 30. We read the information in the newspapers just like other members of the public but we pray he pays us by that time. If he can pay us today, we will appreciate it.

“Our people are dying; they are hungry and some are even sick with no money to treat themselves. It is one of our prayers that he should pay us so that we will be able to provide for our families.”

The governor had in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Sunday said he would pay the workers who were being owed seven months’ salaries.

The statement, which was issued by the media aide to the governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, was silent on whether the workers would be paid all the outstanding salaries or part of the salaries.

The statement read in part, “Before the end of June, workers would be paid their salaries.”

Aregbesola reinstated his promise to pay the workers without specifying how many months on Monday evening when the Australian High Commissioner, Jonathan Richardson, paid him a visit at the Government House in Osogbo.

He said, “I want to appeal to workers in the state to be calm as their period of hardship which is caused by the delay in the payment of salaries will in a matter of weeks be a thing of the past.”

    1. You detractors would surely be put to shame when things turn around in Osun. Over 18 states are in this dilemma with some worse than Osun but you decide to close your eyes to that fact and pillory Ogbeni. And none of you has offered any solution to the problem that is set to spread to more states soon
