NCAA to probe Aero flight diversion incident

The Director-General, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Capt. Muhtar Usman, has said the Aero Contractor’s Lagos-Kaduna flight that diverted to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, last Friday, will be investigated.

The aircraft type, a Boeing 737-500 series, marked 5N-BLE and Flight number NG181, departed Lagos at 5.35pm with 102 passengers on board.

Usman, in a statement from the regulatory authority, had received the Mandatory Occurrence Report from the airline and had commenced immediate investigation into the incident.

The NCAA said its Aviation Safety Inspectors, designated to the airline, were already critically studying the report which would assist in the requisite investigation.

It said the airline’s engineers had fixed the aircraft, however, “our (NCAA) inspectors would still carry out the mandatory investigations to determine the cause of the incident.”

Usman said it was pertinent to note that the pilot and the crew managed the flight in line with Standards and Recommended Practices and landed the aircraft safely.

The Aero flight suffered a depressurised cabin, which triggered the oxygen masks to drop and the flight was diverted.

Another aircraft was provided by the airline to ferry the passengers to Kaduna.

Usman assured the passengers that the safety regime of the NCAA would not be compromised.

“Safety and security of our airline operations will continue to receive maximum attention,” he said.
