The Lagos State Government has cleared tankers, which were illegally parked or abandoned, on the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway.
The government, in a statement by the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority on Monday, Mrs. Bola Ajao, explained that the decision would ensure the safety of Lagosians and free flow of traffic in the area.
The General Manager, LASTMA, Babatunde Edu, who led the team of operatives of the agency in conjunction with the Nigerian Navy and the police on Sunday, said over 50 trailers were removed from the area in accordance with the government’s zero tolerance for gridlocks and indiscipline.
He added that the exercise was to checkmate the excesses of tanker drivers and restore sanity to the area.
Edu said, “The state government, being a responsible and responsive one, will ensure that every citizen has a right to Apapa, and not only the tankers or trucks carrying containers.”
He said efforts had been made in the past to restore sanity and bring back the glory of Apapa, which had been truncated by the tanker drivers.
He added that the enlightenment and enforcement exercise would be a continuous one as the agency would not relent until tanker drivers complied with the directive of the government.
He said, “Series of meetings have been held with the Petroleum Tanker Drivers branch of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers to educate their members and ensure that tanker drivers desist from indiscriminate parking and indiscipline attitude on the road.
“All tanker drivers are advised to adhere strictly to the new directive, as the government will not hesitate to enforce traffic rules and regulations to the latter.”
Edu called on the public to take possession of the road and not hesitate to inform LASTMA of any broken down or abandoned tankers and trucks on the Apapa – Oshodi Expressway, saying the agency had been empowered to respond promptly to distress calls.
