Lagos govt moves to relocate bus stops over gridlock

The Lagos State Government says it will relocate all congested bus stops in the state, especially those sited close to markets.

The government explained that the decision became necessary to ease the gridlock that had become a common feature on Lagos roads.

The decision was reached on Thursday during a tour by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and some officials of the government of some traffic flash points in the state.

Some of the areas visited by the governor and his team were Oworonshoki, Ketu, Mile 12, Ojodu/Berger, Agege/Pen-Cinema, Abule-Egba, Iyana-Ipaja and Dopemu.

The governor said he would soon take another tour of the Apapa and Lagos Island areas.

Ambode said the tour would afford him the opportunity to gather first-hand information about traffic challenges in order to proffer accurate solutions to the menace.

He said, “This tour demonstrates my concern about the gridlock in the state. It is not enough for officials of government to stay in their offices and believe they can find solutions to traffic challenges.

“The truth is that we must start to have solutions to our traffic challenges in the state and that is what we are doing. I want to assure the residents that together as a team, we are going to start noticing improved traffic situation in the state.”

Ambode also approved the construction of a pedestrian bridge at Berger, saying Berger needed a footbridge.

“We don’t want any traffic on the highway, so we are already thinking of additional solutions to allow vehicles to extend outside of the highway.”

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Oluseyi Coker, said the governor had directed that they should not allow bus stops very close to markets.

Coker said, “He particularly directed that we should not allow bus stops very near markets and he pointed out how we could locate these bus stops in a manner that the people will not be seriously affected.”

The General Manager of the Lagos State Public Works Corporation, Ayotunde Sodeinde, said Ambode had approved funds for the agency to rehabilitate damaged roads in the state.

He said, “We are going to work as from Monday. We will not work during the day so that we will not obstruct traffic. We will work during the night and we have a lot of LSPWC units that will handle all the works. Very soon, Lagos roads will be free and motorable.”

  1. Ambode has started off really well. Before he visits the Lekki axis, we can tell him that one of the causes of traffic jams on that axis is the bogus roundabouts on that road. What we need there are fly-overs and not roundabouts. The second point about the Lekki axis is that just one road into the fastest-developing corridor in Africa just does not cut it. The much-talked-about coastal road, parallel to the present Lekki-Epe Expressway, is absolutely necessary. The coastal road is supposed to start from Ahmadu Bello Way (the old Bar Beach) and continue to Epe.

  2. Pls the governor shd approve an overhead bridge between Ijesha n mile2, preferably at 2nd rainbow, so all the vehicles need not go to mile 2 to make a U-turn. This will greatly decongest Mile2 gridlock.

  3. I pray for the successful implementation of the policies of Gov. Ambode's administration.
