FIFA UNDER-20 WORLD CUP: Ghana upset Argentina

Argentina pre-tournament favourites to win Group B, are facing an early exit after they lost 3-2 to Ghana in an exciting Fifa Under-20 World Cup match in Wellington.

Argentina, who boast a side laced with promising players, including senior international Emanuel Mammana, have been one of the biggest disappointments during the early stages of the tournament.

With their fans banging drums in the stands and waving flags, their team delivered the level of football that matched their supporters for enthusiasm.

Argentina had their chances and Angel Correa and Tomas Martinez were a constant threat but Ghana found a way to cope.

Goals to Benjamin Tetteh and Clifford Aboagye either side of halftime helped the African side establish a healthy advantage.

Yaw Yeboah, who is on the books of English giants Manchester City, delivered the decisive blow with a 69th-minute penalty.

Giovanni Simeone, son of Argentine legend Diego Simeone, pulled one back with ten minutes left and when Emiliano Buendia scored in the 90th minute, it was all hands to the pump for Ghana but they held on for a valuable win.

If Argentina want to progress from pool play they will need to beat Austria on Friday in their final match, while Ghana will meet Panama in their final group contest.

Ghana and Austria both have four competition points, while Panama and Argentina each have one.
