Experts hail Buhari’s directive on military check points

Some security experts on Tuesday in Abuja hailed President Buhari’s directive on the dismantling of all military check points in the country.

Some of them who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria said the directive was a welcome development as it would make the Police and the DSS “to be on their toes”.

Mr Ben Okezie, a security Analyst, said the dismantling of the check points was a welcome development.

Okezie said President Muhammadu Buhari, by the directive, had interpreted the constitution which said that the military was in charge of external security, while the police was in charge of internal security.

He said with the pronouncement, the military would be officially handing over the duty of internal security of the country to the police and the DSS.

“Which means the police need to be better equipped to fully be in charge of the internal security.

“The police and DSS must be more vigilant and Nigerians will have to also cooperate with the government by quickly reporting suspicious people to security agencies,” he said.

Okezie also said the directive showed that Buhari is a listening president and that the gesture would alleviate the problems that many Abuja residents were going through in areas where military checkpoints had been causing traffic jams .

Mr Kole Babalola also supported the directive, saying that it was not safe to expose the military to such ad-hoc duty for too long.

He said other security agencies should be on the alert and do their job effectively.

Mr Jubril Ndaice, a security expert, said the directive would “free the military from challenges of concentrating on the road for a very long time and the military will have more troops to be deployed to the fighting area .

“Security and intelligence in other parts of the world is technology-driven and based on intelligence, and I think this is the step the government wants to take,” Ndaice said.
