Edoror emerges Edo Assembly speaker

The member representing Esan Central Constituency, Victor Edoror, has emerged the new speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly.

Edoror was the immediate past Deputy Speaker of the 24-member House.

His emergence came after a motion for his nomination was moved, during the inauguration of the 6th Assembly on Monday, by the member representing Owan East Constituency, Folly Ogedengbe, and supported by the lawmaker representing Ikpoba Okha Constituency, Henry Okhuarobo.

He was declared Speaker by the Clerk of the ‎House, Mrs. Bosede Ogbebor, at about 12.44pm.
The lawmakers also elected the member representing Ovia ‎North East II, Bright Osayande, as the new Deputy Speaker of the House.

Osayande, who was the ‎former Deputy Minority Whip in the preceding assembly, was elected after a voice vote, presided over by the new Speaker went in his favour.

His nomination was announced by the member representing ‎Egor Constituency, Crosby Eribo, and seconded by Lawani Isaac, representing Etsako Central Constituency.

The lawmakers also confirmed the nomination of four other principal officers of the House, as recommended by the state leadership of the All Progressives Congress.

They include Ogedengbe (Owan East) as Majority Leader and Elizabeth Ativie (Uhunmwode) as Deputy Leader.

Others are Sunday Aghedo (Ovia South West) as Chief Whip, while ‎Adjoto Kabiru, (Akoko Edo I) was confirmed as Deputy Whip.

The House, however, suspended the nomination of office Minority Leader, pending when the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party reconciled its nomination.

In his inaugural speech, Edoror said the emergence of the 6th Assembly was geared at complementing the efforts of the State Governor to move the state to the “next level of change.”
While pledging to do his best to propel the 24-member House to success through the passage of people-oriented bills, he urged his colleagues ‎not to relent in their efforts to support the ‎developmental drive of the state government.
