A major fire that engulfed a fuel depot outside the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, nine days ago has been fully extinguished, the State Emergency Service said Wednesday. “As of 10 a.m. local time there are no observable signs of combustion,” the agency said in a statement.
It said that about 100 emergency workers were still at the scene to eliminate the consequences of the blaze and search hot areas where the fire could possibly rekindle. On June 8, the blaze broke out at an oil tank of the fuel depot near Vasylkiv town, 38 kilometers south of Kiev, and spread to 16 neighbouring reservoirs.
Five people, including four firefighters, died and 15 others were injured in the blaze. No fewer than 300 firefighters and emergency workers had been working to control the blaze for more than a week, which was believed to be the biggest fire in Ukraine over the past 50 years. The authorities say investigation is under way to establish the cause of the fire. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
