Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbe was on Monday sworn in before the Togolese Constitutional Court which had declared him a day earlier as the winner of the April 25 presidential elections with 58.77 percent of the votes cast.
He won the polls ahead of four competitors, among them his main challenger Jean-Pierre Fabre who got 35.19 percent of the votes.
“You have elegantly triumphed over your adversaries,” said Abdou Assouma, the president of the Constitutional Court, adding that all the election observation missions said that the April 25 election was free, fair and democratic.
He went on to say that Togolese population was satisfied with Gnassingbe policy over the past five-year term.
“The Court wishes you a successful new five-year term in office,” Assouma said.
Gnassingbe came to power in 2005 through a snap election following the death of his father General Gnassingbe Eyadema who had ruled Togo since 1967, a total of 38 years.
He was re-elected in March 2010 with 60.89 percent ahead of Fabre who got 33.94 percent.
