Student in court for alleged possession of magistrate’s lost phone

The police on Thursday arraigned a 23-year-old student, Alfaruk Umar in a Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, for possession of a magistrate’s lost phone. The Prosecutor, Sgt Abdullah Alhassan, told the court that the accused was arraigned on one-count charge of having in possession stolen property.

Alhassan said the accused was found in possession of Senior Magistrate Abdulazeez Anka’s lost Blackberry phone, reported to have been stolen sometime in March. He told the court that on March 26, Anka had reported to the police that his blackberry phone valued at N45, 000 was stolen at the NNPC Filling Station, Wuse II, Abuja.

He said that on May 10, Umar, a resident of Jabi, Abuja, was arrested by the police at Wuse II, and was found in possession of the stolen Blackberry phone suspected to be that of Anka.

He said the offence contravened Section 319A of the Penal Code. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor prayed the court for a date to enable him open his case against the accused. The Senior Magistrate, Mr Celestine Odo, granted him bail in the sum of N200, 000 and a surety in like sum. Odo said that surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and a person with a reasonable means of livelihood. He adjourned the case till June 16, for hearing.
