Reasons why I sacked Police IG, Suleiman Abba – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has disclosed that the immediate past IG, Suleiman Abba, was sacked following gross indiscipline amongst the personnel of the force during his tenure.

The chairman of the Police Service Commission, Mike Okiro, stated this to journalists following a Police Council meeting, chaired by President Goodluck Jonathan.

“The President, in a very brief way said, during the period of the former IGP, a lot of indiscipline was noticed among the rank and file of the police and as such he felt that a new IG should come and try his luck,” Mr. Okiro said. “That is what (Mr. Jonathan) said, though I cannot give details of that.”
Also at the council, Mr. Jonathan confirmed the appointment of the new Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase.

Mr. Arase was appointed by the president as the Acting IGP following the sack of Mr. Abba on the April 21. He has been in an acting capacity for three weeks.

Emerging from a meeting with Mr. Jonathan, Vice President Namadi Sambo and Mr. Okiro, the now substantive IGP, Mr. Arase, told journalists that the welfare of his men will be “number one on ‎my cardinal responsibilities.”

“You don’t motivate a workforce except their welfare is paramount,” he said. “I’m going to ensure that their welfare is going to be put on the front burner.”

He said though the expectations of Nigerians are high, he could assure them that no Nigerian will suffer any injustice by his inaction or action.

On his order banning road blocks, Mr. Arase said there was already an enforcement policy in place. He said 16 teams have already moved out across the length and breadth of Nigeria to ensure strict compliance.

    1. The 16 teams will probably go to the areas that remittances haven't been proportional to the perceived collections and use them as scape goats

    2. If the former IG was fired because of his corrupt officers, then all the Police Commissioners and DPOs across the nation should suffer the same faith.

  2. Please make public the telephone numbers of the 16 teams so that we can logde our complains. The police doesn't want to quit road blocks because of the MONEY they are collecting on the road. Thanks sir.

    1. And they make returns from these road block right up to the top. The corruption in the force stinks to high heavens. You can't get into the force without giving out money, you can't even pass any academy exam without parting with your hard earned money. It is that bad and rotten. Yet we say we shall fight corruption and I ask, with what force? Sad!

  3. Nigerians should also look out for Police road block and take pictures and videos. Upload pictures and videos online as evidence to put the new IGP on notice.

If road blocks are banned, we should not see the Police on the road collecting money from drivers.

  5. It is even very easy to check them, cos they don't even do it caution. If some of their top officers can take the streets occasionally and see the escapades of their rank and files on road blocks. They will understand the extent of oppression and maltreatment the poor mass have been suffering from the police force that is meant to protect us. I want to believe their irregularities in the streets have a backing from above, else, they wont be so bold with their myriads of nefarious activities in the streets. However, I don't think Mr president have given us the true story behind the IGP's sack.

  6. Enforcement, The men in black are still mounting road block and collecting money opposite Adamac Company in PH Rivers state. Circulate the hotlines of your 16 men team nationwide so that we can call and report any illegal roadblock.

  7. Anonymous ,May 13, 2015 at 7:44 AM.Your suggestion is the best way to curb their excesses but if they should discover that u snap them with camera phone or vedio them, they will kill such person and throw him inside bush. They are higly devilish. That was what they wanted to do for me about two years a go in Igesu valley Ayobo in Alimosho local government area of Lagos state. They always station theselves in that valley and extorting money from okada riders between 8am and 12pm. and from 430pm to 7pm everyday.Only God saved me that day that i have not snaped them before they discover me.If that is the genue reason for his sack by mr president Jonathan, then he deserves it.Truely police men are not trustworthy in this nation and have become monster on the citizens. In fact they are part of Jonathan's problem in Nigeria. They are too corrupt.what police know most is extortion. They have lost their dignity and relevance to the generality of Nigerian Masses. In fact some citizens prefer to die in silence instead of engaging them, when u approach them for solution to problems, instead of attending to you professionally, they will compound it by requesting for money. In fact if i am driving on the highway and i see police and snake,i prefer to kill police.
