Ohanaeze chief threatens Igbo will secede from Nigeria if marginalised

The Chairman of state Presidents of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a socio-cultural organization, in seven Igbo speaking state, Dr. Chris Eluemunoh, on Tuesday warned against any attempt to “further marginalise” the Igbo in Nigeria.

Eluemunoh, who spoke with newsmen in Awka, the Anambra State capital, said such attempt would be greeted with a strong move for self-determination by the Igbo.

For him, Ndigbo had such concluded on such option, waiting for the “opportune time” to use the joker.

He said already, the United Nations had invited some Igbo elders, to hear them out about their demand for a sovereign state for the Igbo in June.

He said former National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr. Dozie Ikedife, would be leading the Igbo delegation to the United Nations in June.

Eluomunoh, who was speaking against the backdrop of speculation that the incoming government of President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, might marginalise the Igbo because the people of the South-East voted against him in the just concluded general elections.

He said some time last year, the African Union had also granted an Igbo delegation a similar audience in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The Ohanaeze boss said the best path the Buhari administration would toe would be to discuss with Igbo leaders on how to chart a viable course for the country.#

Eluomunoh added, “Buhari must give us one additional state to put us at par with our other brothers. He must also implement the report of the National Conference. If he turns his back to that report, he is turning his back to the unity of Nigeria. If he kills the report, he is killing the unity of Nigeria.”

He admitted that the change that came to the country after the last general elections was a welcome development, given the fact that the Peolpes Democratic Party had stayed on the stage for a long time.

The Ohanaeze chief opined that there would be no real change in Nigeria if there “is no structural change” in the country.
Eluemuno disowned the Chief Ralph Obioha-led Ohanaeze Caretaker Committee, which visited Buhari and canvassed for appointments for the Igbos, dismissing report of any conflict in the organisation.

  2. That is the problem with you people, you never see yourselves as part of the country and that is why it has been difficult for you to have political identity. Can't you just for a time see Nigeria as one and work for its unity instead of threatening secession always.

  5. It would be great if the Igbos secede. It's probably their best option for now, and it should not require bloodshed. But they should think it through carefully because they would be landlocked.

    1. You are a big fool thinking it would be land locked, you better check ur map very well. Do u think the southwest will still be part of Nigeria should Biafra secede? Don't u think that a lot of people from the middle would want to join Biafra rather than join the Arewa? U better wise up and stop the delusion.

    4. Stop using being landlocked as a threat....it doesn't work... Apart from that check for some landlocked area and see if they are not doing better than nigeria... At the end if the day if nigeria is divided the north will also be landlocked

    1. I want to ignore all the abuses against my people. That said, my only comment is that ohaneze does not speak for Ndigbo. They are a bunch of hungry, self seeking ass holes. God will punish them for using that platform to bring suffering to our people. They and their children can secede.

  8. A BIAFRIAN state will surely be the ISRAEL of Africa. Surrounded by BLOOD sucking Arabs Muslims yet, ISRAEL remain secure, prosperous and powerful. Biafra would have invent, develope and export technology around the world. To achieve this we must come together as an Igbo nation and not in a CONFUSED, BACKWARD and RETARD entity. Called Nigeria.

  11. Igbos shuld not threaten us..if you want, you can secede. Good riddance to bad rubbish!!! Afterall, Nigeria will now regain her better relationship with other countries, as Igbo brothers have continously dented the image of this country through Drug trafficking, 419 and a whole lot! Nigeria wont miss Igbos!
...dont think other tribes will follow this foolishness.

  12. Democracy carries the day. The igbos marginalised themselves through the ballot box. APGA refused to join the coming together of ACN, CPC and others to form APC. Then, APGA adopted Jonathan as its Presidential candidate. This suggest that APGA support the corruption of the Jonathan administration. Also, manual accreditation in igbo elections suggest a measure of irregularity because card reader accreditation was used in other states.

Nigerians are not fools. Democracy is a fair and equitable process for everyone.

  13. A nation made of the 5 Igbo states is not viable.it will be landlockd and will suffocate. The minority tribes in the SS do not trust Igbos and will not go with you mostly due to the shameful way yu treated them during the war as less than second class citizens. I challenge you to go ahead. The rest of the country will be better for it anyway.

  15. Y would old men who are supposed to be an epitome of wisdom and good choice of words sounding like kids? you are entitled to your vote and no one can hold it against you. when you have proof of marginalization then you can raise alarm instead of crying wolf. Have u guys forgotten the outcome of the Biafra war so soon? war against the country will only leave you guess worse than you were after the biafran war. don't be mislead by the way the war against BH has been fought. Our military will only redeem their image with the demolition of the east. Just try and see.

  17. The Igbos in the era of Ojukwu would have scared me. This present day Igbos will be fight for where the capital of Biafra will be until they will return back to Naija. LOL disunited tribe we are.
Just try and suggest Owerri as the capital and see in in-fighting that we commence.

  18. It is unfortunate that the leadership of Ohaneze should have the impression that the in coming administration will marginalize the Igbos. I uphold the belief that Buari's Government will be so busy putting things right for the country rather than engaging his administration in mediocrity. My advice to the Indigbos is to work closely with the incoming administration and move the country forward. Nigeria will remain undivided and no threat from any tribe will divide the country. All Nigerians should remain proud for showing the world that Black race can remain united as it is in Nigeria today. My prayer is that ECOWAS should lead the unity that Black Africa deserves by merging its resources both manpower and natural to the advancement of the continent. The Europeans are daily showing progress towards United Europe. A practical example is the United States of America. What Africa needs right now is a United African States (UAS) not a divided States.
