Kano State Primary Health Management Board has said the state has not recorded any fresh poliomyelitis case in the last nine months.
The Executive Secretary of the Board, Alhaji Shehu Abdullahi, who said this at a one-day interactive roundtable session on Africa Vaccination week, organised by the Community Health and Research Initiative, in partnership with the board, stated that the last outbreak was recorded in July 2014.
He attributed the achievement to the partnership between Bill and Millinda Gate Foundation and Dangote Foundation, which, he noted, provided funding for routine immunisation in the state, which is expected to end in December 2015.
Abdullahi added, ”Meanwhile, we are looking into other strategies and ways of enlightening the community, especially through the media, so as to continually sensitise the public to bring forward their wards for routine immunisation, which is supposed to be in about five phases.”
In his presentation, the Executive Director of the Community Health Research Initiative, Mohammed Shuaibu, identified malaria, pneumonia, Diarrhea, as well as meningitis and measles as the top leading causes of child deaths.
Shuaibu noted that everywhere, no fewer than than 800,000 children die before attaining the age of five. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
