Governors of the All Progressives Congress, under the aegis of the Progressive Governors Forum, on Wednesday said Nigeria could not afford to entirely ban importation of goods.
The governors explained that the most practicable thing to do was for the nation to diversify the economy- especially in the area of agriculture, and look for ways to create a competitive market with imported products.
The PGF, led by Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, said this in a communiqué at the end of a two-day retreat in Abuja, on Wednesday.
The forum observed that the Nigerian economy was in dire need of diversification in order to meet modern challenges.
The governors agreed that “all those who hold leadership positions in the party are ready to instigate the right followers that will produce results.”
Some of the decisions reached at the retreat are, “That all APC governors will embark on a peer review mechanism to facilitate and replicate positive governance strategies and policies in all progressive states.
“The retreat agreed that from the day of inauguration, the activities of the progressives will determine the stature of the party for the future; hence the need for all to begin works that will speak rather than a replication of promises.”
Earlier, the PGF explained that it decided to organise the pre-inauguration retreat with the objective of defining strategic ways of delivering on the electoral promises made by the APC.
Five panels were constituted among the governors with each panel discussing relevant problem areas in the country and reaching a conclusion on probable solutions.
The event was declared open by the Vice-President-Elect, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on behalf of the President-Elect, Muhammadu Buhari.
It brought together resource persons in the areas of security, economics, governance, infrastructure, human capital development. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
