Lagos threatens sanctions against trucks blocking Apapa roads

The Lagos State Government has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to tanker or truck divers, occupying inner roads in Apapa to vacate the roads or risk sanctions.

The government noted that hundreds of tankers had been parked on the Eko Bridge down to Apapa, and around the Mile 2 end of the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, queuing to load unavailable fuel, adding that commuters in the areas had been spending an average of six hours daily in gridlock.

The decision to ask tanker drivers to stay away was taken after a meeting among the Lagos State Government, the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, the Petroleum Tankers Drivers, and other stakeholder unions in Alausa, Ikeja, on Wednesday.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Kayode Opeifa, said the meeting agreed that 48 hours should be given to tanker drivers queuing between 200 and 300 meters to fuel depots to leave Lagos pending the availability of the commodity.

He said, “No tanker should be seen on the Eko Bridge, down to Liverpool or before Coconut on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway. By Thursday (today), the tanker drivers and owners must make one lane available for motorists to ply pending the expiration of the ultimatum when enforcement would begin.

Opeifa said, “The enforcement would be done by the various unions in the area with the support of the state government, the police and the Federal Road Safety Corps. Any tanker that does not comply will be fined and will not be released until the fines are paid.”

He commissioner appealed to NUPENG, PTD and NARTO to ensure that the agreement reached was not breached, saying that by Friday afternoon, the government would move into the area to begin enforcement.

He added that persuasion would be used, rather than force.
