I'm ready to hand over on May 29 – Amaechi

Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has dismissed speculations that he will not hand over power on May 29.

Amaechi, who wondered what he would be doing in office after May 29, said the date is sacrosanct.

The governor, who spoke on Friday in Port Harcourt through the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, said members of the state executive had made ready their notes preparatory to the terminal date of his administration.

He said, “We are ready for handover unlike the Peoples Democratic Party, at the centre that is busy making new appointments and sacking people.

“They have refused to brief the Muhammadu Buhari Transition Team and All Progressives Congress is not screaming blue murder. Rather, the APC at the centre is meeting and planning and preparing for government.”

Painting an ugly scenario in Rivers State, Amaechi stated that rather than support democracy, PDP had been busy doctoring election results and voter register.

“Unfortunately in Rivers State, PDP is busy doctoring election results and voter register as to cover its stolen mandate and crying wolf to cover its mischief.”

The transition committee set up by the state Governor-elect, Chief Nyesom Wike, had on Thursday described Amaechi’s alleged refusal to form a transition committee for the outgoing administration as most irresponsible.

The secretary to Wike’s transition committee, Mr. Frank Owhor, had on Thursday expressed worry that Amaechi had turned down all entreaties to ensure that there was a seamless transition in the state on May 29.

Owhor, who spoke at a news briefing in Port Harcourt, said while Amaechi could be a member of the transition committee set up by the President-elect, Mohammadu Buhari, the governor’s refusal to do same in Rivers State was uncalled for.

Owhor added that letters dispatched to the governor by personal delivery and DHL courier service were rejected and returned.

He said, “In another instance, a top ranking officer informed the transition committee that members of staff were under instruction not to receive any correspondence from the transition committee.

“Mails dispatched to the governor by electronic mail and also delivered to the secretary to the state government are not even acknowledged.”
