I have confidence in Buhari, says Gowon

A former Head of State and elder statesman, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, has expressed confidence in the ability of the coming administration of Muhammadu Buhari to restore the lost glory of education in the country.

Gowon stated this on Saturday at the official commissioning of Bogoro Community Study Centre of the National Open University of Nigeria, located in Bogoro, Bogoro Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The BCSC, built by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund in collaboration with NOUN, is the 9th Community Study Centre in the country, bringing the number of NOUN study centres nationwide to 63.

Gowon, who was the Chairman of the occasion, commended interventions by the Jonathan-led administration. He also called for an immediate overhaul of the Education sector in the country by the incoming government.

He said, “I commend and support the huge investment being focused on the Education sector by this present government and I hope the incoming government will do the same.

“This is why I greatly appreciate the efforts of the Federal Government, through TETFUND, in providing teaching and learning facilities for our colleges and universities.

“We must continue to work hard and restore the lost glory of our education system in the country especially the quality of our education.”

He added, “I know Buhari very well and I know he will do well to improve the Education sector in the country. We must focus on raising men and women of sound character and good reputation.”

The elder statesman, who lamented the loss of values among the nation’s youths, called on them to also seek good character in their studies.

“Seek not education but also excel in learning education and character,” he advised.

Gowon, who wondered why the hall of the study centre would be named after him, however said he was very impressed and overwhelmed by what he saw and heard.

He commended the Executive Secretary of TETFUND, Prof. Suleiman Bogoro, for his sterling leadership qualities, which brought about the establishment of the centre.

  2. Obasanjo oshi wo? Obasanjo rádaràda wo ni gan? What did he achieve in his 8yrs in power? Nothing remarkable.. what did he contribute to the development of youths and Uni graduates' employment? Nada. What abt power sector, oil sector, industrialization? What legacy did he leave behind for incoming govts? He was busy battling Atiku for 3rd term. Even during his military regime he acquired public lands to himself thru the Land Use Act and now has a big farm in Otta. Obasanjo is nothing but an influential political giant deciding who rules, who gets elected here and there, just like the late Adedibu in Ibadan. He has no character worthy of emulation. He isn't an elder statesman whatsoever. Age doesn't count here
