Hundreds of youths protest incessant killings in Plateau

A coalition of youth groups in their numbers, dressed in black and white Monday blocked major roads in Jos, the Plateau state capital protesting the incessant night attacks and killings in Riyom, Barkin Ladi and Wase Local Government Areas of the state.

The protesting youths carrying placards said they will petition the Federal government and the Nigerian Military before the International Criminal Court, ICC for crimes against humanity and killing of unarmed civilians.

Leader of the youths, Dr. Daniel Meshak who spoke at the Old Airport road junction in Jos condemned the killing of innocent citizens across the state and call on all authorities concerned to appropriately deal with the matter to its very root.

His words, “The Military should make known the outcome of their two weeks operation in parts of Barkin Ladi and Riyom where the killings still continues till this moment. Plateau state has become known for incessant night attacks by daring marauding attackers who are either identified as unknown gunmen or Fulani herdsmen.

“What is more worrisome is the fact that these attacks were carried out when the Military formation by the Special Task Force, STF are in full operation in Plateau, instead of facing the attackers as their training and mandate required, but the personnel of the STF have become so relaxed that the life of a Plateau man could be equated with that of a mosquito and none of the culprits of this madness was ever prosecuted.”

He called for “a thorough search to be done in areas of Mahanga, Bangai, Shonong, Atakar, Kwi, Rim and Sopp villages of Riyom Local government as well as parts of Barkin Ladi and Bokkos so as to fish out those unknown men who have been terrorizing the areas.”

Meanwhile, Chairperson of Riyom Local Government Council, Mrs. Josephine Piyo said that the damage done in the locality would have been avoided if security personnel been prompt in responding to the distress calls from citizens and called for a change in attitude.
