The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Monday, warned the President elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari against any attempt to remove fuel subsidy, saying such action would be vehemently resisted.
Similarly, it called on the out going President Goodluck Jonathan not to assent to the budget when it gets to his table, if there was no provision for fuel subsidy in it.
In a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Com. Nwanko Ezekiel, in Abuja, the group said removing fuel subsidy was anti-people.
The statement said NANS took the decision after wide consultations with the majority of its affiliate member unions, all its structures as well as past leaders.
“We enjoin the National Assembly to have another look at their approved budget and make provisions for fuel subsidy before forwarding it to the President for his assent.
“The incoming administration has said so much about blocking leakages and we believe that the subsidy provisions are not part of the leakages to be blocked.
“The subsidy is almost the only benefit the poor Nigerian masses derive from our abundant petroleum resources.
“We hereby remind the government that in 2012, Nigerians rose in unison against the removal leading to the ‘Occupy Protest’ that almost crumbled our national economy,’’ it said.
Nwanko maintained that Nigerian students were ever ready to once again be in the fore front of agitation against removal of fuel subsidy and would not shy away from such responsibility.
According to him, Nigeria’s economy was still a mono economy; solely dependent on oil, and any increase in price of fuel would trigger hyper inflation and hardship.
He called for diversification of the country’s economy and broaden the foreign exchange earnings. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

Big lie, student did no say dnt remove fuel subsidy. The thieves want to use in the name of student.
ReplyDeletethere is no subsidy in the first place, how can you sibsidize something that has gone far below what we pay for it. these thievies where just sharing our money to themselves... God will punish them. #bringbackourgirls
ReplyDeleteLazy union. Jonathan did not include subsidy in the budget. It is already taken out. Enough of free money to some oil thieves. No to subsidy.
ReplyDeleteEzekiel Nwankwo i guess is a chronic illiterate and an embarrassment to students for believing that there is a subsidy payment that is helping the poor masses. Otherwise, he should tell us how much he will be paid to mobilize students to challenge removal of so-called subsidy.
ReplyDeleteA learned person will know that the best way for the common man to benefit from the kind of govt we have in Nigeria is to remove the alleged subsidy payment. Govt has been cheating Nigerians by claiming that fuel is above N87.00 per litre hence the need for subsidy. There is no better time to deregulate the petroleum sector than now. This is because fuel will authomatically go down below N50.00 per litre and the masses will be happy for it. Govt can then encourage local refining of the product to further reduce cost even in the event of rise in crude oil price. No student should mind Ezekiel Nwankwo. he should go to the street to challenge GEJ and NASS for removing it from the budget and leave the incoming govt alone. Anofia!
I do not think it is Nigerian said this. Someone is trying to pull a fast one using the Nigerian students. They can't be this ignorant. We all understand that this subsidy is one of the big scams available today and that GEJ actually meant well when he attempted removing it in 2012.
