An Abuja Senior Magistrates’ Court in Wuse Zone 2 on Thursday sentenced one Emeka Nnate to one month in prison or pay N100 as fine for attempting to commit an offence. The senior magistrate, Aminu Eri, convicted Nnate, a student of no fixed address, after he pleaded guilty of the offence leveled against him.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Frances Tanko, had told the court that a team of police on patrol along Wuse, Abuja, arrested and brought the convict to the Wuse Police Station on May 15. He said that Nnate, who was suspected to be a bag snatcher, was caught at the Wuse Market bus stop after a hot chase. He added that five men were also arrested for public nuisance.
The case prosecutor, Cpl. Gideon Ekomson, told the court that the men were arrested by same patrol team. Ekomson said the accused persons are Kenneth David, Victor Okon, Nuhu Yakubu, Tunde Lawal and Oche Lawal, all of no fixed address. He said the accused were suspected to be a gang snatching people’s bags and mobile phones at the Wuse Market bus stop.
He said some dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp were found in their possession, an offence which contravened Section 183 of Penal Code. The accused persons all pleaded not guilty to the charge against them. Magistrate Eri, however, struck out the case on the grounds that the court lacked jurisdiction to try such cases.
