The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has kicked against a court order mandating it to withdraw its officials from the house of the Senator-elect for Ogun East Senatorial District, Mr. Buruji Kashamu, insisting that it is acting within the confine of the law.
Justice Ibrahim Buba of Federal High Court in Lagos, had on Tuesday ordered tens of officials of the agency to vacate Kashamu’s Lagos Mansion on Oladipo Omotosho Street, Lekki without delay.
The court had described the siege, which started on Saturday, as sub judice on the grounds that the agency did not follow due process.
In a statement on Tuesday by its spokesperson, Mitchell Ofoyeju, the NDLEA described the court order as trivial and an attempt to prevent it from performing its statutory functions. The agency maintained it had received an order from the United States Government to extradite Kashamu for drug related offences and claimed to have served a warrant of arrest on him.
The statement read, “NDLEA has described as diversionary and inconsequential reports of a court order directing its men to vacate the residence of Senator-elect, Buruji Kashamu, and requesting both the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Bello Adoke and Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade to appear in court.
“The NDLEA does not believe that any court will issue an order preventing a government agency from performing its statutory responsibilities in a lawful manner. The Agency has therefore refused to be distracted and will continue to maintain presence at the residence. It is advisable that Kashamu respects the law by submitting himself to the due process of the law.
“We are prepared to explore all legal means in handling this case to a logical conclusion. The Nigerian Government has received a formal request from the United States government for the extradition of Prince Buriji Kashamu. It also has a provisional warrant of arrest on him contrary to claims by his attorneys.”
The statement stated further that Kashamu had been a target of both the US Drug Enforcement Administration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement of the Department of Homeland Security for over 20 years and was further indicted by the Grand Jury in the Northern District of Illinois, United States on heroin trafficking charges. NDLEA claims to be performing there statutary responsibilies which can be interpreted by a competed court and that court has ruled on the matter.Secondly is this country an independent nation or been ruled by USA
ReplyDeleteEvery nation is dependent on the other one way or the other. When people like you tend to support crime, using our corrupt law courts and the fact that some of you benefit from these rogues, tell me how can we fight corruption in this country? When in troubles we run to either US or UK for assistance, but when it comes to issues of fighting crime, we ask stupid questions if whether we are dependent on them. Head or tail, your Kashamu and his likes must face the music, if he is not guilty and thinks he is not the person they are looking for, let him go and clear himself! It is not for any corrupt judge here to stamp his decision on the operations of the agencies of government.
DeleteMy brother don't mind some ignorance people asking stupid question. It was clearly stated in the news report that the US requested the extradition of Kashamu from Nigeria just like Nigeria can also request for the extradition of any fugitive from US. That does not undermine the sovereignty of Nigeria in anyway.
DeleteThe judicial system in US is not a corrupt one like the one we have in Nigeria. If he is truly innocent, why can't he go and clear himself over there. More over his so call legal representative blaming Bode George and Obasanjo for his travail. Are these people the us or NDLEA ?. Clear conscience fears no accusations. Go and clear yourself Kashamu.

We now know why Buruji out of annoyance and frustration with impending extradition now clearly facing him lashed out on the Ogun State Chapter PDP Chairman during their meeting in Abuja while Buruji's companion in crime, Capital Oil Ubah could not help himself but cry like a baby.
It takes a lot of courage for a real man to face is impending doom and final demise.
What we have here are nothing but a bunch of lily-livered cowards. What a shame.
