Nigerian prosecutors on Wednesday withdrew murder charges against a 15-year-old girl who was accused of using rat poison to kill the 35-year-old man she had married.
Prosecutor Lamido Abba Soron-Dinki asked the High Court in Gezawa, Kano state, to “terminate the case of culpable homicide against Wasila Tasi’u”, who was 14 when she married Umar Sani.
“With a heavy heart, I apply that the accused be discharged,” he added. Legal sources in Kano told AFP separately that Nigeria had faced pressure to drop the case which has angered rights activists.
The family of Mr. Sani are said to have forgiven the girl for the deed committed in 2014.
Ms. Tasi’u was married out to Mr. Sani in 2014 as an underage at 14 years.
She allegedly poisoned her husband alongside four others with rat poison out of frustration.
Her case has drawn international attention with calls for her life to be spared. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

Thank you Jesus. Men kindly wait till a girl is18 years before you marry her. The law which pegs adulthood at 18 is now stupid.
ReplyDeleteTypo above. I meant to write, the law which pegs adulthood at 18 is not stupid.
