The International Agency for Research on Cancer has predicted that the annual new cases of cancers are expected to rise from 11 million to 16 million in 2020, with 70 per cent of them coming from developing countries.
Also, while there are more cases of prostrate cancer diagnosed than any other cancer, breast cancer is more prevalent in females than other cancers.
A Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Maiduguri in Borno State, Isa Hussaini, said these in Abuja while delivering a paper entitled ‘The mining of Nigerian medicinal plants for cancer therapy’, delivered at the public lecture and induction of Fellows of the Nigeria Academy of Science.
“Among the cancers, pancreatic cancer is the deadliest with mean survival time of six months, followed by glioblastoma multiforme, which has an average survival period of nine to 12 months,” he stated.
According to him, research has indicated that cancer, a deadly ailment caused by both genetic and environmental factors, remains the second leading cause of death in many countries of the world.
Hussaini, however, added that the Cancer Research Project of UNIMAID, was using scientific techniques to validate the rationale for the use of herbal medications by Traditional Medicine Practitioners.
He said, “Cancer is now the second leading cause of deaths in many countries and there is no cure for most of the diseases. In Africa, TMPs claim to have effective treatments for what they diagnose as cancers.”
Hussaini also dispelled the notions that cancer was a disease of the western world, describing it as completely false.
Quoting the World Health Organisation, he said cancer kills more than HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined.
“The International Agency for Research on Cancer predicts that the annual new cases of cancers are expected to rise from 11 million to 16 million in 2020, some 70 per cent of which will be in developing countries”, he stated.
