The President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, has extolled what he referred to as the sacrifices of the Nigerian working class in the face of economic tough times in their everyday struggle to survive.
In his May Day message to the Nigerian workers, Buhari said he was aware of the hardships of workers which he said were compounded by poor governance and corruption in the country.
According to him, the Nigerian working class are among the worst hit social groups on account of poor living standards, a situation, he said, was inconsistent with Nigeria’s vast oil wealth.
Buhari expressed dismay at the paradox of Nigeria’s oil wealth, characterised with rising poverty while a few corrupt officials were making themselves very rich at the expense of people’s wealth.
The President-elect also expressed regret that honest labour had been relegated to the background.
He warned that a country that sacrificed honesty in favour of quick wealth by whatever means could not expect to achieve progress and respect in the eyes of other nations.
Buhari reassured Nigerian workers that his incoming administration would be committed to boosting their morale in order to increase productivity and their income.
Meanwhile, Buhari has expressed sadness over the killing of 10 soldiers from Niger Republic by the Boko Haram terrorists.
In a separate statement signed on his behalf by his media team in Abuja on Thursday, Buhari said he was deeply saddened that soldiers from other African countries that came to help Nigeria to fight terrorism were targeted and killed by the terrorists.
