Avoid unnecessary appointments, NLC urges Buhari

The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Kano State, Mr. Kabir Kado, has advised the incoming administration of Muhammadu Buhari to avoid unnecessary appointments.

He gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano on Thursday.

He cited the appointments of two ministers for each ministry by former administrations as part of reasons for high cost of governance in the country.

According to him, the funds spent on each of the ministers, their aides and other officials were waste of public resources.

“The money paid to ministers and their aides should have been used for developmental projects,” he said.

He said unnecessary appointments at national, state and local government levels must be avoided so as to conserve funds for development.

“The incoming President had lamented the high cost of governance in the country and stressed that such must be reduced in order to move the country forward.

“So the money being spent on them should be used to improve the well-being of Nigerians,” he added.

Ado said it would be wrong for lawmakers to fix their salary, adding that the only body legally responsible for that is the National Salaries and Wages Commission.

“Politicians fix their salaries; they don’t want the public to know.

“We are hoping that if the incoming administration comes into office, such things will become a thing of the past,” he said.
