Plateau LP gov candidate, others join APC

The camp of the All Progressive Congress in Plateau State was swelled on Tuesday when the governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Saturday’s election, Mr. Bagudu Hirse, defected to the APC.

Hirse was joined by his Mega Party counterpart, Mrs. Elizabeth Yirse, as both called on all their supporters to join them into their new party and to vote massively for the governorship candidate of the APC , Mr. Simon Lalong.

There were also speculations that the Deputy Governor, Mr. Ignatius Longjan, who is a Peoples Democratic Party leader, might also join the APC.

Addressing newsmen in Jos on Tuesday, Hirse, who spoke on behalf of others, said they were disenchanted that the ruling party did not abide by the zoning arrangement agreed upon by the people of the state.

Hirse said, “I have also been a strong advocate of power rotation among the three political senatorial zones and therefore, believe that it should be the turn of the southern zone to produce the governor this time around regardless of the party platform as the end of tyranny and bad governance has come because change is here .

“In view of the recent victory of Maj. Gen. Mohammadu Buhari at the Presidential elections, it has become necessary for me to rethink my political ambition to govern this state .”

In a related development, former commissioners, who served under Governor Jonah Jang, have expressed surprise at a statement credited to the governor, calling on all voters to come out on Saturday with either their temporal or permanent voting cards.

The group, under the aegis of ‘Redemption Integrity Group’, while addressing the press in Jos on Tuesday, described the statement as an act of impunity and contrary to electoral rules and guidelines as stipulated by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Former Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Nankin Bagudu, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, asked voters in the state to disregard the statement.

He said, “In the light of the above, we are drawing the attention of our people in view of the report in the media attributed to the governor of the state in which he is reported to have directed that people, who have no PVC, be allowed to use their Temporary Voters Card in the Saturday elections.

“We want to tell our people categorically to disregard the statement made by the governor regarding the conduct of the next elections, since he has no authority to give such instructions or directives. The governor ought to know that even as a governor of a state, he has no power or authority on matters that are under the powers of INEC.”
