The Peoples Democratic Party has told its members that it is immoral for them to leave the party few days after it lost the presidential election to the main opposition party, the All Progressives Congress.
The party said though it recongnised the right of anyone to freely associate with any political party of his choice, it nevertheless said doing so at this particular time was immoral.
National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr, Olisa Metuh, stated this while answering questions from journalists in Abuja on Tuesday over the gale of defection that is hitting the party across the country.
Metuh wondered what those who have left the ruling party in the last few days after losing the presidential election would teach their children in term of morals.
He said, “It is right for anyone to defect or move because the Constitution allows for free association. But basically, it is immoral for someone to leave his party because we lost the presidential election few days ago.
“It is about the character. Yes, you have the constitutional right to move or defect, but what lesson do you want to teach your children?
“Just because we have lost the presidential election? Yes, we want members (in our party) but not fiddle-minded people.
“We want people who are committed, but the fair weather people are free to leave us. Those who are committed will still be with us.”
On the emergence of Maj.Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.) as the President-elect, Metuh promised that his party would cooperate with him in running the country.
He however said the party was not interested in working with the incoming president.
“We are not interested in working with him, but we will cooperate with him to have a united country,” he added.
He also refused to make a categorical statement on whether the party would challenge the victory of the APC at the election petition tribunal.
Metuh also accused the APC of trying to stifle opposition and impose a one-party system and complete totalitarian rule in the country.
He said reports reaching the party from across the country indicated that “the APC has been desperately seeking ways to destabilise our ranks and weaken our formations by approaching some senior members of our National Executive Committee with phantom promises and threats ostensibly to use them to inject crisis in our fold and pave the way for our elected members to cross over to APC.
“Furthermore, the PDP has it on good authority that part of this agenda of the APC is to intimidate and harass our members especially officials who served under our administration.”
He, however, refused to give the names of such officials who he alleged were being forced to join the APC or members of the opposition who were behind the alleged threat.
Metuh said the party under the national leadership of its National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu would do everything within the law to protect those who served under the present administration. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

What do you expect, after the national leadership of the party and Mr President forced Mimiko on us in Ondo State. The truth is PDP national leadership thought we had no option but they are dead wrong. We warned them about the consequence of their action. Now they are complaining. Good for them.
ReplyDeleteGreat my brother. They took us for granted. Playing gods, imposing unpopular candidates left and right. We're going to destroy pdp completely. This is not to say that there won't be any opposition party, but a new one will spring up not pdp.
DeleteSee who is complaining. When people from other parties were defecting to the PDP, the PDP were saying they are the largest party in Africa. Now that the table have turn they are saying its immoral. What irony.
ReplyDeletePlease stop defecting, APC stop accepting them. Let them stay in their stupid party and form a strong opposition please.
ReplyDeleteAny true party member cannot leave his or her party simply because such party is not in power. This shows the type of people who call themselves our leaders. They are all selfish and political contractors.
