NIGERIANEYE OPINION POLL: Who will emerge as the winner of the 2015 Lagos State Governorship Elections?

While many still bask in the euphoria of the recently concluded Presidential Elections, won by General Muhammadu Buahri of course, in less than a week, millions of Nigerians will again elect our leaders at the state level.

Out of the 36 states in Nigeria, Lagos state is one of the most important states in Nigeria, infact Lagos is widely regarded as the Commercial/Economic heartbeat of the nation, with a population of over 18 million people.

Enough respect to all the political parties contesting, but from all indications, the race for the Alausa Round House will be a straight fight between PDP’s Jimi Agbaje and APC’s Akinwumi Ambode.

The then AD, later AC, ACN and now APC has been in power in Lagos state since 1999, meaning, Lagos state is one state PDP has never won, and in this years polls, PDP presents a very strong candidate, Jimi Agbaje, who is no new comer to Lagos politics, as he has tried to get into the seat of power in Alausa.

In 2007, following his failure to clinch the gubernatorial ticket of the then Action Congress (AC) following the anointment of Babatunde Fashola by former governor Bola Tinubu, he defected to the Democratic Peoples Alliance (DPA) where he flew the party’s flag in the 2007 Governorship election in Lagos state. DPA obviously being a weaker platform and with his face conspicuously missing on the ballot he came a distant 3rd behind Fashola of the AC backed by the incumbent at that time Bola Tinubu and Musiliu Obanikoro who was heavily backed by the federal forces of the PDP.

Jimi Agbaje will be coming up against All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Akinwumi Ambode who aims to take over from the arguably one of the best governors in the country, Babatunde Fashola.

Recently, 10 candidates withdrew from the Lagos governorship race and called on their supporters to vote for the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Akinwunmi Ambode.

The ten candidate who relinquished their gubernatorial ambitions are candidate Accord Party, Adeshina Buruji; Independent Democrats, Obadia Akinola; Action Alliance, Ishola Aregbesola; and Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, Babatunde Sarumi.

Others include the African People’s Alliance, Abiodun Oyegunle; KOWA Party, Victor Adeniji; All Progressives Grand Alliance, Adeshina Olayokun; New Nigeria’s People Party, Sesan Olatunde; the Citizens Popular Party, Sylvester Eze; and the Progressives People’s Alliance, Pauline Ojochide.

In FebruaryNigerianEye readers voted Buhari ahead of Jonathan as winner of the presidential opinion poll, and last week Buhari emerged as winner of the presidential election, defeating Goodluck Jonathan. (SEE RESULTS OF POLL HERE)

Now we are conducting another opinion poll, will NigerianEye readers again predict the outcome of the Lagos Gubernatorial elections?

The question is...

Who do you think will emerge as the winner of the 2015 Lagos State Governorship Elections?

A) Akinwummi Ambode (APC)
B) Jimi Agbaje (PDP)

  6. If truely Lagosian deserves a mega state we ve all been clamouring for, this is the time we need APC again with support of the federal might. Agbaje maybe good, but we need federal influence. Lagos is a special state that needs serious Federal attention. There is no family in Nigeria without at least a representative in Lagos. Let us make Lagos our dream land.

JK has no think- tank in his team or correct me, if I'm wrong. Narrow-minded people like you must stop imagining that JK may win. Lagos now has the best opportunity to align with the Federal government to fully consolidate and deliver on the excellence we enjoy so far. Lagos must not be in the hands of opposition party effective May 29, 2015. Let's vote wisely.

  14. It's gonna take sometime for Nigerians to understand you can't vote a personality without considering the impact of his party. 4 years ago, Nigerians voted for GEJ based on their personal impression of the guy as a good person, humble, had no-shoes etc though they hated his party. Eventually, he did what PDP as a party is known for - Massive graft, corruption and destruction of infrastructure and stagnation in development, oppression etc. Politicians work in sync with party manifestos and the party's vision for the people of the state or nation. I've come to realise that APC States are attractive to guys from the PDP States based on the better living conditions and perceived level of development. Those that grew up in Lagos remember what the infamous Oshodi and Obalende looked like in 2006, Lekki express way was hell, Lagos was dirty, crime was rampant, only office workers paid taxes while business people evaded tax etc. Now for 16years, the AC, ACN, APC has turned the state around. It's a wonder that it's mainly guys from other states especially the east that are bent on voting the PDP and Jimi (personally, I feel that guy is in the wrong party). Lagos is a Yoruba state but accommodates all Nigerians. Majority carries the vote in democracy so let the real owners/indigent people of Lagos decide and those who honestly remember the Lagos we used to have and what Ogun state looked like under the PDP led Gbenga Daniel. The main thing I love about the APC in Lagos is their vision which I've heard them communicate to the citizens time without number... Their dream for a better Lagos, their 40 year plan etc. Show me another state with such vision. I won't understand people's motive for changing a party so bad / corrupt at the centre and putting same party in charge of our States.

    2. Let the polls speak for itself. It's just a few days away and you didn't dispute my points. Show me a good model of PDP rule in Nigeria... Lagos needs change quite alright, but it's not PDP that is the change we need. APC isn't the best but they are far better than PDP. Let their States attest to their performance cos that's what secured them the presidency in the first place

    3. The only reason anyone will want to change a winning team is due to IBB (Intentional Bad Bele). The PDP supporters are jealous of Lagos achievements and are seriously scared that Lagos might actually do well under an APC led Federal Government. God forbid. 19. I laugh at the poll! We are sick of Jagaban. JK will emerge the governor of LAGOS to your shock. We are tired of using us as your ATM machine. Killing businesses with taxes and taking eternity to complete road projects. We park cars far away from home due to poor roads. You only maintain roads the world can see. Just like a man that paints the exterior of the house while the interiors or dirty. Enough is enough!!! We are tired of you and your god fathers - fasola, Tinubu aka - omo Chicago, Jagaban!!!! 1. The only manifesto of PDP at campaign grounds are Jagaban is a thief, what many Lagosians do not know is that for 16 years PDP under OBJ, etc tried as they did could not pin Jagaban down to any fraud. We know what GEJ did to Gov. Aliyu, Gov. Lamido, Nyako etc by neutralising their political power. Whatever they could not legally proof any fraud against Tinubu hence resort to rumours propaganda, documentary etc. While their influence is waning that of Jagaban is rising. APC go on all the way. Lagos wants a change from opposition to mainstream Eko oni baje

  23. That poll is fake. You will soon realize that lagosians have made up their minds. We are reclaiming our territory from the God fathers who tax us heavily and still make us pay expensive tolls. They don't mean well for us and will never mean well. Half of our lands have been sold and shared within a small circle. Taxes collected by one man, roads built by one man, billions paid to one man, job creation is zero, Lasu school fees hiked and reduced because of election. We are delivering LAGOS from the hands of APC. The milking must end. It's time for change. We will never align with Federal. We will continue to develop!! JK will win!!

They wish their own states could make the kind of progress Lagos is making and is sure to make under an APC led government. I also notice it is some kind of revenge strategy for Lagos contributing to the loss of PDP at the center. Both reasons are low and sadly do not speak well of a person or a people. I would hate to ascribe such to any one group of people. Vote APC. Vote Ambode for change. Eko o ni baje o.
