Jonathan’s loss linked with voters’ apathy – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party in Anambra State has attributed the general apathy and low turnout of voters for the State Assembly election in the state to the loss of President Goodluck Jonathan in the March 28 presidential election.

Saturday election was marred by general apathy and pockets of violence across the state.

In most places visited by newsmen though accreditation started as early as 8am, voter turnout was generally low.

Commenting on the development, the Coordinator of President Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organisation in the state, Mr. Okey Ezenwa, said the failure of the president to emerge as winner of the presidential polls, resulted in the poor participation of voters in the State Assembly elections.

He also confirmed cases of violence and snatching of ballot boxes in Agulu and Ogbunike areas of the state, saying “the current government cannot exonerate itself from this.

“The loss of Jonathan in the last election had contributed to the apathy of voters seen in the state and the pocket of violence is not helping matters either.”

But the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, while addressing newsmen at his ward located at Eri in Aguleri, said the report of violence in some parts of the state had informed his going out to monitor happenings in the state.

The governor expressed sadness that reports reaching him indicated that thugs suspected to be loyal to the PDP were said to have carted away sensitive electoral materials in some areas across the three senatorial districts in the state.

The thugs were alleged to have been aided by the police and the army.

Obiano said he had lodged reports with the State Resident Electoral Commissioner who promised that alternative arrangements would be made to avoid voting challenges.

He said the destination of the sensitive materials had to be traced and those involved arrested by the police.
