FG condemns lynching of Boko Haram suspects

The Federal Government has condemned what it called self-help by people who lynch individuals that are suspected to be members of the dreaded Islamist group, the Boko Haram, instead of reporting them to appropriate authorities.

In a statement in Abuja on Thursday, Coordinator of the National Information Centre, Mr. Mike Omeri, said the increasing trend was condemnable.

Omeri said, “The National Information Centre has noted with dismay, a new culture of self-help gradually creeping into the Nigerian society. This is buttressed by the growing number of cases where people rightly or wrongly suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents are lynched without recourse to the law.

“This unacceptable development must not be allowed to fester in our society. Nigerians are advised to desist from self-help and resorting to jungle justice and rather report suspicious persons to law enforcement agencies.”

The NIC Coordinator who is also the Director General of the National Orientation Agency also noted the high voter turnout, the dedication and patience of Nigerian voters saying they indicated the triumph of democracy in Nigeria.

Omeri said, “The record high voter turnout, especially in areas that were previously under Boko Haram threat or control is a clear result of the Nigerian military’s successes in securing our country and the Nigerian people’s faith in this government to provide both a safe and democratic election.
